Giraffes by Moonlight (in progress) by Sizzlewaggle
Original pattern, strip piecing and applique.
This is (probably) a finished top, but now I am pondering the best way to quilt it. I do a lot of shopping on "everything 50% off" days at a donation store in my town that only deals in needlework related things (but all kinds, sewing, knitting, the works). They sell fabric by the pound, and it's all odd sizes...some cuts of several yards, and some small scraps. I assign myself a category to look for, like "stripes", or "blenders". One of the baskets I always check out is the "ethnic" novelty prints. The giraffe border fabric was a 3-yard cut. The piecing in the center is from the scrap bin, strip piecing and cut in oblong shapes that sort of emulate the woven strips of fabric in "Kente" cloth. That was my inspiration. Then, of course, I had to have a moon, and found a perfect scrap for that.
