Floating Flowers by Jenniesthreads
I needed a relatively quick quilt for my Great Aunty May so followed on from my Bear Paws baby quilt. I raided my Mother-in-Law's blue stash (more appropriate than mine) and pieced together 6.5" squares (I had a ruler that size so it made it easier to cut!). I then quilted them with cross hatch straight lines. I hadn't planned on such dense quilting, only the diagonals across the centre of the blocks, but my quilting guide wasn't long enough, so I doubled the amount of quilting. Not that it mattered much as I really struggled with keeping the lines straight. Nevertheless, from a distance it doesn't look too bad - I'm sure only my mum will notice.
I then pulled pink fabrics from my own stash and used double sided iron on stickiness to make petals and flowers. Peeling the papers off these shapes made me incredibly grumpy an took a totally disproportionate amount of time. But by ironing them on it made it far easier to applique them without rucks and puckers. I free motion stitched around the petals twice, then echoed the shape within the petal. This was the part I hadn't been sure if I could pull off, so I'm thrilled it worked.
