Description

Having seen many feathers on here, and having made a different kind a couple weeks ago, I decided to give the Anna Maria Horner feathers a try. While I love the looks of them I did have trouble making them and think these three will become a wall quilt. I really struggled with these due to my own spatial issues and thus it was somewhat frustrating (I know others have loved making them so this really is my issue!!). I actually tried a couple methods including paper piecing which I did like better. And I sure do love the look of them... Most of the fabrics I used are from Tula Pink's "Acacia" collection with some others thrown in from my stash. I think I will be putting sashing between the feathers and then adding a border.

Update 6-22-14  Quilted and ready for binding

Update 6-29-14  Done and ready to be gifted.

Update 7-1-14 This has been given to one of my staff who has been waiting a long time for a wall quilt and is now hung in her office:-)

Oh, boo hoo! I want you to join us for the Feathers Swap and now you've scared everyone away!!!! I promise I'm making a tutorial for the Feathers Swap that will be easier and not have as much "extra clutter" that the full quilt pattern has. Please say you'll give it another try, Mary, after I get the tutorial ready.
Can you believe I am concurrently writing a tutorial for the feather, a tutorial for my July block and writing a pattern for a Messenger Bag??????

I think your feathers are booootiful and I want you to do it again. Say you'll consider it.

True

Quilterinmotion LOL I do not want to scare anyone off as this is clearly my issue...I just could not figure out how to cut and get both sides going in the right direction AND then I had to join those bottom background pieces. OMG I am really challenged around. Spatial issues...scary. Others have not had trouble so it is just my inability to "see" things before I do them. BUT I will try your tutorial as I am sure it will be way easier to understand than this pattern was...and I do love the look of them. Now I was never going to make the other feathers I made again either and now love them. So was the frustration wears off AND I have your tutorial I may be all set. Oh and maybe I should not try it while my mother is here and my life has been taken I over by others;-)

True

Quilterinmotion forgot to say thank you and WOW to all your pattern writing...

Readerowl

oooh, love these too.

True

Readerowl thank you Karen

libellenart

I think they look awesome !! I like the one where one half is just one piece of fabric :-)

True

Carolmarie LOL Thank you...sometimes I just get obsessed and until I try something it "haunts" me. And with these fabrics it was hard to go wrong!

True

libellenart thank you...that was my desperation side as I was frustrated, and then when looked at her pattern saw she did some with all one fabric. And this collection has such gorgeous prints knew at least that side would love good:-)

Terryt1955

True , I'm right there with you on being spatially dyslexic! But these 3 feathers will ake a great wall hanging. Love the Tula fabric!

HawkFan

I love these and seeing them makes me want to make some. Quilterinmotion , I'll wait for your tutorial though Marsha

True

Terryt1955 I thought of you the whole time...as I was pulling my hair out! You will note only one of these is done "right" withe the pieces on both sides headed in the right direction. But I was not throwing out what I did as I love the fabric and decided I did not care!! Thank you.

True

HawkFan thank you...and maybe you can teach me?!!

Terryt1955

Well I'm do dyslexic that I didn't even notice the orientation of the feathers until you mentioned it! So there, as long as the fabric is great who cares or notices!

Quilterinmotion

True , I must 'fess up so you won't feel so bad. Remember I said I made "lots of strips"? Well, I made lots of strips because I was trying to made the other side of the feather and kept getting them all in the same direction. Finally I figured it out. Also, I put pattern piece B on the wrong way twice at least. It definitely gets easier the more you make. I think you need to make more now that you have those three done! You're normal, and if your mom is still there, I'm sure you weren't 100% concentrating. Give yourself a break, Mary, you're equally as capable as me to making them. I know it.

True

Quilterinmotion LOL you do make me feel better BUT I still have no clue how to get the orientation correct as the one that has the correct left side I paper pieced in desperation!! Now maybe when your tutorial is done I will "get" it.

True

Terryt1955 LOL my thoughts exactly;-)

True

Good news is as my house is now quiet I read everything again and know what I did wrong...so at least I know the errors of my ways;-)

Quilterinmotion

True , maybe a collaboration on a tutorial is in order with each of us that has done one already put their best tips in. I read it several times during the process and still did silly things I had to correct. I just think there too much going on in that pattern but after all, she developed the design, she can write all she wants. I love AMH fabric and designs.

Terryt1955

Love the added touch of the sashing so that you can see that great fabric one more time!! Will you hang this up at work?

True

Terryt1955 Thank you...I love these fabrics. I am not sure about work as I do not think I have any more wall space there (I have three quilts in my office!) so may have to find a place here for it. I started to do the sashing as an all round border (even cut out more fabric) and stopped to do some thing else and decided liked it as it was so stopped:-)

Skynme

Absolutely Gorgeous!!!!!

True

Carolmarie thank you...we have four cats and two dogs bioth labs.

True

Oops bioth means both...

True

Skynme thank you I really like it!

Skynme

True I can see why its gorgeous! You did an amazing job. AMH did two new quilts this weekend and I was going to post the link, but of course now I cant find it...anyway one was the feathers in a circle and it was pretty.

True

Skynme oh will have to go look for her new ones...not that I am up for more feathers...yet!! ;-)

Quilterinmotion

True , it came out beautiful! So glad you like it; that will inspire you to do more....in September!

True

Quilterinmotion thank you...and we shall see ;-)

Drnic2c

Quilterinmotion I am looking forward to your feather swap in September.

Quilterinmotion

Drnic2c , that is great to know. I hope we get lots of participants so we can get a wonderful variety of feathers to share. Sign up coming soon.

Caribousmom

Well, you may have struggled with this, Mary - but it came out beautifully!!!

True

Caribousmom thank you!

HawkFan

Beautiful finish. That binding is absolutely perfect!

True

HawkFan thank you...isn't that binding fabric awesome! Just love it...

HawkFan

I love all the fabrics you used

True

HawkFan thank you...I never have looked much at Tula Pink fabrics before and the bought some on a whim and LOVE them...the colors are simply amazing. I got them for some other projects and just used scraps for this...so rich feeling.

True

Oh and then had a lot of luck pulling others from my stash that went perfectly...so that made me very happy!!
