Golden Card Trick by Scientificquilter
Card trick, square in a square
This quilt is from a block and fabrics I picked out in 2009 at the beginning of my quilting journey. I originally wanted brighter colors, but my stash was small, and I put together these colors that reminded me of fall before the quilt was said & done.
A few years after I had cut all the fabrics, I put the blocks together for the 5 card trick blocks. I don't remember why the blocks were ready to go, but not put together yet.
I liked the idea of the inset middle of the card trick & searched around for an alternative block that poked outside in the middle. So I decided to alternate the blocks with a fairly large inset 'square in a square' block.
Then a while later, I bordered the quilt, with the dark brown borders and the four colored corners.
And because I had a very small amount of background fabric left, I appliqued the tiny triangles over the top of the dark part of the borders to complete out the square design happening around the square in a square block.
I marked it up for quilting two years ago when I was working through some sort of frustration. (around August of 2012).
At the last quilting retreat I attended, I pieced together a back of some of the blocks and some extra fabrics that matched.
It sat marked for a good year and a half before basting the quilt.
And I have been doing lots of Free Motion Quilting this year, so it was sitting in a small pile of fabrics I wanted to be quilted sometime this year.
The quilt is close to a yard on each side.
I have been working on the quilting for the past week.
