Description

Participating in the Star Crossed QAL. Right now, with one Block 1 done I'm ambivalent about my color choices. It'll be fine but it won't be one of my favorite quilts. Link to the pattern provided below

July 5, 2014 - Went with a brighter fabric for block 1 and I like this better so I went ahead and made all 9 that I'll need for the quilt. I'm using a peppered cotton for the background so it requires a lot of starch and ironing.

July 27, 2014 - finished all 6 of Block 2. I put a few together to see what it looks like so far and I'm liking it better than when I just had Block 1.

Aug 23, 2014 - made one Block 3. I decided to fussy cut the Pretty Potent flower and paper piece the center. I like the looks of this block.

Sept 28, 2014 - finished a couple more block 3s and a couple block 4s. I went with a dark print in the center instead of just the background fabric the pattern calls for. It definitely needs that extra color. I also decided to swap the position of my block 3s and 4s. I have 3 more block 3 and 6 more 4s to make.

October 6, 2014 - I put my nose to the grindstone and cranked out the rest of the blocks and put it all together. I needed to get this done for my own sanity. I think I like it well enough but I'm going to put it away for a while until I'm ready to revisit it and complete it. I shamelessly included a picture with the newest addition to our family, our pug puppy, Scout. She's about 4 months old and is a real character. I'm sure you'll see more of her in future pictures.

True

Love fabrics...what are you not loving and can you switch it things around to like it better?

Caribousmom

What don't you like about your color choices? I love these colors together...

HawkFan

Caribousmom True I feel like it's a little dull and blah but I tend towards bright colors so that's probably what it is. I think it will make a very nice quilt though. I am thinking of switching up a couple of blocks and using a slightly different background color - we'll see. Thanks for your comments - makes me feel better!!

Cseawright

I like the colors as well.

HawkFan

Thank you Cseawright - it's nice to get unbiased opinions. I know I'm too hard on myself sometimes

True

I don't know of this will apply to you or not BUT for me this QAL is having me make a quilt in a very different manner than I usually do. I never make all one block then the next, etc. for a couple reasons. One I like to see how blocks will look together so tend to do some of each. And I also find I get a little more bored doing same blocks all in a row. Anyway my point is I have found I look at just block one and think do I like this??? But when pull out other fabrics and remind myself of other blocks to come I do.

HawkFan

True That is part of the problem, especially because the first block uses the most muted fabric in my selection. I was half tempted to jump the gun and put together a couple of the other blocks to see but I'm just going to trust my instincts.

True

HawkFan yup...same here:-)

Terryt1955

I love these colors and I do think it's one of the quieter blocks in the quilt so don't second guess yourself. Think of it as the resting spot for your eye. Do like Mary says and just keep looking at your other fabrics that will be used later.

Quilterinmotion

True and HawkFan , I'm breathing deep sighs of relief and laughing at the same time. Can you picture that???? I just told a friend last night that doing this method of a QAL is so opposite what I normally do that I didn't know if I could stay with the plan and not sneak off to do a few of the others blocks too. I never do just one section of the quilt and work in this manner.

Maybe it's a good lesson in patience and trusting in our choices to do this. Audrey, I like those two colors together. They are on opposite ends of the spectrum and bring a vibration to the block that perhaps you can't hear over the hum of your indecision.

I am impatient to see how the others colors will add life to this block but I will hold off...if I possibly can. LOL

HawkFan

True Quilterinmotion I think there's a reason we're in this together - we have many similar personality traits. It's so nice to have others to provide encouragement. Thanks Marsha!

True

Quilterinmotion HawkFan so agree!! And I have committed to myself not to jump ahead and make the others as I do believe I learn something from each thing I do so am thinking that is case this time as well! But it so helps to know it is not just me.

HawkFan

True I also don't want to jump ahead because you and Caribousmom are putting a lot of work into organizing this and doing tutorials and if you can do all that work, I can be patient.

True

HawkFan :-) you are so sweet! But also do what you need to so for your own sanity;-)

Quilterinmotion

HawkFan , True ,
I dislike the pattern's way of explaining the "how to" so I'll just bide my time with other projects and let Caribousmom and you, True , do those great things you do ahead of time to make it easier for the rest of us.

It's so nice to stitch with like-minded gals. Thanks so much.

Caribousmom

I am so with all of you on this ... I don't like doing the same block over and over...but I do think this will be a good learning curve for us and show us just how awesome we all are at choosing fabrics LOL!

Quilt455

Really like your fabric.

HawkFan

Quilt455 Thanks Cathie - I'm making some more of these with a different orange fabric. I may use both in the quilt

Quilterinmotion

Caribousmom , I do think we will all learn something from this. I finished the ninth block yesterday and have to say I was so glad to be done with that block!

True

I really liked your first block but love your second one... Great switch! What is the new fabric? And congrats on having all 9 done!

Conniharns

HawkFan I love the new orange you chose. But I like brights a lot. Love softer colors as well!! I guess it just depends what look you are after! You that have all 9 blocks done already shall be named the TURBOETTES...as Wendy is the main Turbo! Hope that's ok!! Great block :)

HawkFan

True Thanks Mary. I considered doing 5 of one version and 4 of the other but that first fabric just seemed a bit dull. I'm afraid I don't know what the fabric is. I've had it in my stash for a while and there wasn't a selvage on it. I'm terrible about noting what fabrics are

HawkFan

Conniharns Thanks Conni. I like bright colors too which is probably why the original one bugged me so much. I could never live up to Caribousmom so turboette sounds about right for me. She's the original TURBO.

Caribousmom

LOL! On a more serious note - I really like both oranges you used, Audrey :)

HawkFan

Caribousmom Thanks Wendy.

HawkFan

LOL Carolmarie I'm looking forward to seeing your version!

Terryt1955

That;s the beauty of this pattern, you can switch out the fabric in the same block to give it a bit more variety. And when joined with the other blocks I think it's going to look great. The trick I think, is staying in the same color wheel.
I had plans to do the first block but looks like I'm joining Carolmarie in the Slowettes.

True

Love block two's center fabric! Gorgeous.

HawkFan

True Thanks Mary. That's the fabric I built the whole thing around. I picked it up when I was in Boston in May

True

I got to see it for first time in person when I went to Alewives Fabrics and loved it! Such an excellent choice.

Caribousmom

Looks awesome, Audrey - love that block two with the fussy cut center!

HawkFan

Caribousmom Thanks Wendy

Caribousmom

Carolmarie That's why I make Kip clean the bathroom...oh and the kitty litter box too :)

Quilterinmotion

HawkFan , I have to agree with the others. That fussycut block is the cat's meow! It's an awesome block with that center!

HawkFan

Quilterinmotion Thanks Marsha!

Conniharns

Caribousmom What....Kip cleans the bathroom. I want more Sister Wife time!! Geesh!

Caribousmom

Conniharns Oh yes he does! And he vacumns and mops too. Why do you think I have so much time to quilt!??!?!? LOL

Quilterinmotion

I love how the flower center of Block #2 picks up that orange in block #1.

HawkFan

Quilterinmotion Thank you Marsha - I had the flower fabric in hand as I wandered through the shop looking for coordinating oranges. I wound up helping another woman pick out oranges for a different project at the same time smile

Quilterinmotion

Your good deed for that day. You are a nice person, Audrey!

Quilt455

Love your fussy cut center block. This is going to be wonderful. I am so excited to see them all finished.

HawkFan

Quilt455 Thanks Cathie - I'm looking forward to seeing them all finished too. Everyone picked beautiful fabrics

Readerowl

Wow! this one is calling my name. Wonderful.

True

Love your newest block!!

Caribousmom

Your block three is gorgeous - love the fussy cut center!

Aizome

Love your latest block! The colors are smashing!

Jodyrose

Love the fussy cut center, it makes it POP!

Conniharns

HawkFan Great block Hawkfan! I love that center block. I should have thought about fussy cutting my center! Very nice.

Skynme

You already know that I love this, but it really is pretty. Those beautiful center flowers are a great touch!

HawkFan

Readerowl Thanks Karen. I'm not crazy about blocks 1 & 2 but I do like this one

HawkFan

True Thanks Mary! I see what you mean about a lot of work. I got a lot of the fabric cut for the others. Definitely not going to do them all in one sitting

HawkFan

Caribousmom Thank you Wendy! I'm liking the quilt better now

HawkFan

Thanks Aizome smile

HawkFan

Thank you Jodyrose - I like fussy cutting and this was a perfect chance to use it

HawkFan

Conniharns Thanks Conni. I got the idea from True when she said she paper pieced the center.

HawkFan

Skynme Thanks Erica. You get to see everything twice LOL. I am really happy with the block which makes it easier to spend the time it takes to make them

Quilterinmotion

I really LOVE Block #3, Audrey. Beautiful block and your fussy cutting & paper piecing really make it fantastic!. You are going to have an incredible quilt. I think the simplicity of your Block 1&2 are going to make Blocks 3 (and four most likely) really the the crowning glory of the quilt.

HawkFan

Quilterinmotion Thanks Marsha. After seeing this first block 3, I am much happier and I wish I had the time to crank them all out so I can see the quilt top with them in place. I agree that I think it'll make a big difference with the quilt. It has been an interesting way to construct a top smile

Quilt455

Still love your fussy cut center. As I have made it well know, I am not a lover of orange, but this orange is so pretty, I might have to change my mind.

HawkFan

Quilt455 Thanks Cathie - that's quite a compliment!

Skynme

Love it, it has kind of a neon glow that I just LOVE. Cant wait to see the big finish!

HawkFan

Skynme Thanks Erica. It does really show up neon in the pictures. It's bright but not that bright, just my mediocre photography skills LOL

True

Really like the print in middle of block four... And very creative switch there!!

Mymble

Wow- this is my first time seeing yours- just beautiful- love the flower in the center- has a great summer feel to it!

HawkFan

True I was debating between the gray floral fabric I picked up on our shopping trip or this one. The other prints tend towards more geometric and straight lines so I went with that. I decided to make the switch to add more color since there are more block 3s than 4s. Trying to make the best of a quilt I'm not in love with smile

HawkFan

Mymble Thanks Margaret - I picked up the flower fabric (Pretty Potent) in a fabric shop in Cambridge. If we're ever there at the same time (& have some offspring-duty free time, we'll have to go to it)

Mymble

HawkFan A fabric shop in Cambridge- is that Gather Here? That is on my visit list when I get back to Boston! You will not have to do any convincing to get me to fabric shop!

HawkFan

Mymble Yep that's the one. Small but she had some very new fabrics. There are a couple of others in the area that I found too

Mymble

HawkFan oh no...a couple more...hmmm...this could be very dangerous.

HawkFan

Mymble There's also the Cambridge Quilt shop - again a small place but I found some nice fabric there. Parking is easier there since they have a parking lot. Gather Here is in a house so you may wind up parking several blocks away.

HawkFan

Carolmarie Thanks Carol. The nice thing about blocks 3 and 4 is they're identical except for the center so when you're making your 3s, you can audition different center ideas (and corner blocks if you want) and you can see immediately what they'll look like with the others.

Caribousmom

I love that dark center in your block 4, audrey!

HawkFan

Caribousmom Thanks Wendy!

Skynme

Ok this picture is too cute and I want to pin it to my Pinterest board...I love this quilt, I would have a hard time letting this go. You did an amazing job on it!

True

Really love the sun shot!! And Scout is so darn cute...the quilt really looks awesome and I cannot wait to have mine this far!

HawkFan

Skynme Thanks Erica. I need the encouragement. It's not a favorite of mine but that's probably because it was pretty time-intensive. I am liking it more now that it's together smile

HawkFan

True Thanks Mary - pets make everything look better don't they? Thanks for being our fearless leader on this project!

HawkFan

Thank you Carolmarie - I was anxious to get mine done too so I stayed up until after midnight last night working on it.

Quilt455

Wow this is wonderful and are you way ahead. Good for you. Love your fabric

ArloDeanQuilts

Beautiful quilt, and most likely the cutest puppy ever!

HawkFan

Quilt455 Thanks Cathie - after feeling behind on a lot of my projects, it's nice to be ahead on one smile

HawkFan

ArloDeanQuilts Thank you Belinda. She is a cutie and is very photogenic.

Conniharns

HawkFan Wowee...you go girl!! Your quilt looks fabulous!! Can't believe you have it pieced together already! But I know what you mean...just want to get it done! I had to take a break for a couple weeks and now I am ready to start block 4!!

Mymble

I love the photo with scout! Your quilt looks amazing all assembled- it really is bursting with sunshine and the flowers are so wonderful!

HawkFan

Conniharns Thanks Conni - my schedule is pretty packed over the next month+ so I'm glad not to have this hanging over my head.

HawkFan

Mymble Thank you Margaret. I wasn't liking it as I was making it because I thought the background I chose was too dark but it's growing on me. Now my problem is all that negative space that has to be quilted LOL.

Quilterinmotion

HawkFan , Scout really is perfect in the middle of the quilt. I think he's about the cutest pup I've seen .... since my friend's Corgi arrived a few weeks ago. The quilt...to say the least....is fantastic. I love those flowers and hope someday to get some of that fabric. I'm so jealous that your's is finished. That was my plan for this week before we head to FLA but LIFE gets in the way and we were just consumed with the death of Bud's sister and all that entails for him as her survivor. The quilt might go to Quilt Retreat with so I can get it finished in October!

HawkFan

Quilterinmotion Thanks Marsha. She's learning about sitting on quilts just like the cats - must be an instinct. I was bound and determined to finish the top this weekend and fortunately I didn't have one of those days where things go wrong. I probably would have tried to push through. Apropos of nothing, Scout is named for a character in To Kill a Mockingbird - one of my all time favorite books. It was my daughter's suggestion. My condolences to you and Bud. I know he's got quite a bit ahead of him.

Caribousmom

Wow, you kicked it out, Audrey!!! And it is gorgeous!!! Although, Scout is stealing the show in that one photo :) What a cutie!

Quilterinmotion

HawkFan , thank you. Scout is a cute name. Our son almost named their black lab pup Scout, but Trooper won out. I wish I could pick Scout up and hug him. What an adorable creature he is! Your quilt is fantabulous!!!!

HawkFan

Caribousmom Thanks Wendy - I'm not above exploiting Scout for her cute factor smile

HawkFan

Quilterinmotion She was named Daisy when we got her from the rescue group but that name didn't fit our family's style. I loved my daughter's idea and we renamed her Scout. She is definitely hug-able and affectionate so she puts up with lots of attention.

Quilterinmotion

I showed Scout's picture to my SIL and grandson. They want a pug now! They have a yellow lab, Penny Lane. I won't be surprised if they get a pug. Scout is a great salesman.

HawkFan

Quilterinmotion They are very affectionate dogs (sometimes referred to as velcro dogs LOL). I had no idea how popular they were til we got her.
