Description

July 23, 2014:

This pillow is part of the Pillow Pop Sew-along Group.

I have never done string piecing before, so this was a new thing for me! The pillow measures 16" X 16" finished and is constructed by making 4-6" string blocks which are then cut down to make the smaller blocks for the pillow construction...so you are working with teeny little strips. As with so many of these pillows which use small pieces, I always feel a little dread starting them - and then I end up loving the final result!

I used many scraps for the blocks and even for the dark turquoise border strip on the front and also on the back of the pillow. There was enough left over from the pieced border to use a nice strip of it on the back as well - and I included a hidden zipper. Instead of binding my pillow (like in the book), I decided to just sew right sides together. I did zig zag those inner seams for greater durability.

I quilted this with straight lines - first making an "X" through the middle of the pillow, then quilting parallel lines in each quadrant, echoing the "X".

For people planning to make this one, I recommend cutting the border strips slightly larger than the book recommends and then trimming the pillow down to the correct size after each border is added...I found this improved accuracy as it is hard not to get distortion when sewing together small, string pieced blocks.

What a fresh beauty of a pillow! Love it and of course every part of it is gorgeous. Makes me want to get back to my strong quilt as do love how it looks:-)

Caribousmom

True Thanks, Mary! It is a good way to use up scraps - but I did notice a lot of stretch in those blocks once the paper was removed!!! So it is a little tricky to get those blocks together and end up with something close to square LOL!

HawkFan

So bright and pretty. I love the clean lines on the back as a contrast to the vibrancy of the front.

Very pretty! I've never done string piecing either. I like how this came out.

Dtscrapper

That is really pretty! I love how the teal strip is constant in the blocks and make sort of a square.

Gorgeous!! ❤️

Caribousmom

Dtscrapper I like that too, Paula - the pattern shows to do that - but you could use any color, doesn't have to be teal!

Skynme thanks, Erica!

cally68 Thank you :) An interesting technique that I've always wanted to try!

Caribousmom

HawkFan thanks, Audrey - the front was so busy that I thought the back would be nice for a place to rest one's eye if wanted :)

Aizome

Beau-to-tious! How did you get that book photo to pop up???

Caribousmom

Aizome Thank you! There is an "optional badge" which you can link to your project...so when you write up your project, scroll down until you see the "optional badge" section...then go to the drop down menu and look for the Pillow Pop Sewalong badge :)

I love this pillow. You just have the act of putting fabrics together...keep hoping it will rub off on me.

Quilt455 Thanks, Cathie - but you totally underestimate your own talent! I love what you put together!!!
