Description

After checking out a pattern mentioned by +skynme I fell in love with this bear!  I have friend who lives in mountains outside of Boulder and they have bears as frequent visitors and when I showed her the pattern she also fell in love...so I told her I would give a try at making her a wall quilt using the smaller pattern (12").  So here it is started.  Hardest part is deciding on fabrics.

Update 10-5-14 Made 4 wonky scrappy wonky stars for corners and also paper pieced "mountains" for side borders.  Plan to do slightly different shaped "mountains" for top and bottom border but using same fabrics.  Had to find more border fabric but it is already on its way to me with a couple options for binding.

I added pictures of the two pieces of art my friend had sent me to help me know her colors and theme in room where bear quilt will hang.
Update 10-11-14 top done

Update 10-19-14 Little Bear is done and ready to go to his new home.  I did meandering FMQ around bear to make him pop out and also did a straight stitch around his head for same reason (Not sure it was needed).  Then a FMQ way line in one border as that is how the bear walks through the woods looking for berries;-)  And then straight stitch on two colored borders in matching thread.

I started using new gloves for FMQ, Machingers, and coud not believe how much they helped me.  Took some getting use to and need more practice with them but much better than other gloves I had.

Charwirfs

One of the best bear patterns I have ever seen. The expression on his face is so real. Love the scrappy look!

Readerowl

Love for sure!

Mymble

This is so wonderful- great fabric choices-love the color contrasts and the way you used the prints- a super job in every way- looking forward to seeing the whole finished quilt!

HawkFan

Beautiful, Mary. I love your mix of fabrics. She's developing an elephant pattern that's amazing.

HawkFan Mymble Carolmarie Readerowl Charwirfs thank you all...it was a lot of fun! And there are a lot of tiny pieces...smaller than I have worked with before but using the template method of cutting fabric it made it a none issue. Truly tyring to visualize how fabrics would play together was hardest. And I saw her elephant Audrey and loved it!

Sewhappy

He is so cute!! - and great job on fabric selection!

True

Sewhappy thank you so much!!

Gail

This is super cool!!

True

Gail thank you!!

Quilterinmotion

I agree with everything said above, True . I love the fabrics and I think fabric selection is definitely the important step here. You aced it! What a sweet bear!

Capetowngirl

Stunning - looks complicated. Paper piecing definitely on my to do list

True

Capetowngirl thank you...it is not as complicated as it looks as you follow the numbers. I use a template technique for cutting out pieces of fabric that really helps make it a breeze.

True

Quilterinmotion thank you so much...I really like looking at him as I ponder borders.

Readerowl

love the stars and mountains. This keeps getting better and better.

True

Readerowl thank you so much Karen! The person I am making this for makes me think of wildlife, the moon, stars and mountains so trying to use those concepts in her quilt:-)

Mymble

Ah the stars and mountains are perfect!

True

Mymble thank you so much Margaret!

True

Carolmarie thanks Carol...started the top border tonight but after working all day did not get very far:-(

True

Carolmarie :-). I seldom even try to quilt after commuting and working all day... I am grateful for my job but wish it left more time to quilt!!

Quilt455

Too cute. I agree, I want more quilting time and i only work 1.5 miles away. Hehehe Grandkids keep getting in the way.

True

Quilt455 thank you!! And grandkids are awesome but... ;-)

Quilterinmotion

Wow- your quilt is going to compliment the artwork so well- fantastic!

True

Mymble :-) I sure hope that is how she feels...thanks

Caribousmom

You are inspiring me to try one of these, Mary! Great fabric selections! Love it!

True

Caribousmom thank you so much! Did you see the amazing one on FB Group? With you eye for color yours would be amazing!

Mymble

The top looks wonderful- love those great corner stars!

True

Mymble thank you... I thought about doing some sort of pieced border for last border as well but then moved on;-)

Capetowngirl

Your Top is gorgeous. I love your bear

Mymble

True well, to my eye what you did is just right- the bear is so fab and the geese the right addition- so the border seems to "finish" it without competing with the bear... I think it's great!

True

Capetowngirl thank you so much...

True

Mymble thank you that is what I was hoping...I got worried too much detail in border and he would be lost in it...

Mymble

Oh yay! It is so so great! I know she will love it- how could anyone not?

True

Mymble thank you! I think she will be happy with it:-)

True

Carolmarie oops missed this comment, sorry!! and thank you I am kind of in love with him.
