Description

This bus pillow is to be the first of seven to be part of my daughter's second grade reading corner.  She told me the small couch she picked up last year would be recovered and the new grant-funded listening center ready for a 'grand opening' in November. However, she was not going to be able to get the cushions she wanted.  When I looked at the Pillow Pop selections for November and saw the bus print in 'Graphic Juxtaposition' I had one of those light-bulb-goes-on moments.  I had a fat quarter bundle of the Mo Williams fabric, plus some solids from stash and larger pieces of a couple fabrics.  The plan had been to make the throw quilt designed for the collection, but the stack was still sitting in my (huge) future projects collection. Scratch throw quilt and substitute cushions.  One reading group can sit in the couch corner and another sit on the cushions in another area for reading/listening.

I adapted the design in the book by making it larger (20 x 20) and substituting a scrap of wide wale corduroy for the felted wool. I thought it might be more suitable for second graders.  The panel section is pieced with a quilt as you go technique.  The back uses additional bus fabric and quote and is also quilted.  It has a hidden zipper. It may not be recognizable as the design from the book, but the kids will love it.

Pillows #2 and #3 are off to the classroom, and four more started. Three are easy cheater-panel fronts like 'True Story' but with different quotes and illustrations. The last is a Gumdrop from the book.  The feet for making the zipper backs are not even back in the case, but all lined up ready to go.
