Christmas Tree skirt for 2014 by Speattle
Home & Decoration
I've had this home sewn tree skirt since 1979. It was gifted to me by a dear family friend (RIP) who made it for me. It was totally blank and she gave it to me with a stack of little scraps and instructions to use a scrap and add something each year about a significant event of that year.
So over the years there have been additions of new homes, new babies, graduations, weddings, illness, trips, weather, etc. Each year my husband and I discuss what should be added for that particular year. 2014 was an easy one because our youngest graduated from college, so he gets to be the feature for the year.
When each child has been born, I started out with a blue or pink bear to symbolize that birth. As they have graduated or gotten married, I have kept a bear to symbolize the events. So this year's is a bear in a grad gown.
Two of my kids are married. They got wedding bears with their spouses for their marriage years. As they have started families, I knit little booties in pink or blue and sewed them to the wedding year embroidery. One couple shows 2 pink booties for their 2 daughters, and the other couple has a pink bootie and a blue bootie for their daughter and son.
For many years I just did free motion embroidery or applique. Some years have a little purchased patch. And there are a couple of recent years done with my computerized embroidery machine that I got in 2011. I decided this year though to go back to the free motion embroidery. I did it on one of my modern machines.
I wonder what 2015 will inspire me to stitch to adorn the the tree skirt?
