I am not sure Florence, but I think they do these blocks that way as an alternative to cutting triangles and then having to sew bias edges. Its standard to sew the blocks bigger then trim. If you read through this post, http://www.generations-quilt-patterns.com/quarter-square-triangles.html she shows you how to trim them accurately- I use her way;)
Oh and forgot- at the bottom of that page- she provides a link to a free download- quarter square triangle ( or hourglass) rotary cutting chart. It gives the exact measurements for before and after ;)))...and you are right- some fabric waste for sure, but the sewing is easier if you aren't up to sewing bias edges.
Love your fabrics!!
Mymble Thank you, the link is very helpful !
Fabrics are very expensive here ( 20 $ and more for one yard ) so I try not to waste !!
Florence oh my - 20.00 a yard - I would feel the same way. Are you able to order online and get a bargain or are you then hit with an import tax ???
Mymble I order online but it's not the same ... I like to touch fabrics and my screen is not very smooth ;) !!
The shipping cost are not free , for a little order shipping cost are more than fabrics! but for a "big" order , there is import tax ... you must calculate right !!
Gorgeous fabrics and ouch those prices hurt!
