Hoops and petticoats. by Patw
18th century hoops (or panniers if you prefer) have been a thorn in my side when it comes to making period doll clothes. Previously, I had simply installed a padded wire support into the regular petticoat, but I really needed a separate undergarment. I'd attempted to make a large hoop using muslin with channels, and that turned out badly. Finally I researched doll clothes, and hoops-- and came up with a simple design. The full-size originals are steel, covered with leather, with cloth tapes. My repro is made in milliner's wire with 1/4 inch linen/cotton bookbinder's tape. It's not pretty, but I just draped one of my fabrics over it, and it WORKS! The fabric obviously needs a press, and probably a flat lining-- it's a scarf weight sari.
