Description

I signed up for the Beach Bound mini quilt swap on Insta. I can post details here because nobody in my group is on TB. My partner likes Carolyn Friedlander fabrics so that's easy for me since I think I own every fabric from every one of her lines  Among other things, she likes beach shacks and blues and greens.

I've paper pieced 4 beach shacks using Friedlander fabrics along with some Day Sail and Tula Pink fabrics. I plan to add nautical flags on each of the shacks. There is a nautical flag alphabet and her first name is 4 letters which is perfect, I can spell out her name on top of the 4 shacks. The flags are traditionally done in bolder colors (black, yellow, white, red, royal blue) but those won't look good with this mini so I'm going to use different colors.

I decided to use buttons from my stash (thanks to my MIL who handed them down to me) for the "doorknobs". One of the cabanas is busier than the others but I think if I put it between the two most neutral ones it will be fine. Now to decide how to do the flags - pieced or appliqued (probably applique since that's easier)

July 4, 2015 - decided against the flags. Just made the top too busy. I may use them for the back or for an extra like a zippered bag. Top is finished and I'm contemplating how I want to quilt it: zig-zag lines following the roofs, vertical straight-line quilting, vertical wavy lines...

July 10, 2015 - finished it and now just have to wait until the end of August to ship it. I'm putting together a packet of extras to send along. I outlined the shacks and then went with wavy lines in the "sand" and "sky". I also tried something new with the binding. I used the "sky" fabric around the top of the quilt and the "sand" fabric around the bottom, trying to match up roughly where those two meet at the "sea". I like how that part came out. Have had lots of comments and likes on the various pictures on IG but not a single comment or like from the person it's actually for although she has been posting and making her mini for her partner. Not sure what to think of that...

Aug 21, 2015 - update: A couple of weeks ago, my partner finally spotted her mini on Instagram and "liked" it. Today she posted this comment on it "Whenever I check this hashtag I keep returning to these houses, secretly hoping they are for me" So excited to send them to her - shipping date is Aug 30!

HawkFan

Thanks Drnic2c It is a great theme to work with

True

I am jealous of your partner this is awesome...classy and fun (just like you;-)

Terryt1955

So adorable! Love the use of Carolyn's awesome fabric too. I knew Mary would chime in about having a 4 letter name whether it's Mary or True. Good thing Cathie has 6 or she'd be knocking on your door.

Sewhappy

I love beach huts and these are fabulous. Great fabric choices. Can you please share the pattern?

HawkFan

True Aw thanks Mary!

HawkFan

ROFLMAO Terryt1955 !

HawkFan

Thank you Sewhappy - I think I got the pattern on Craftsy. I just have some pages printed out (just the ones with some of the huts) - I'll see if I can find the link

True

Terryt1955 I just wanted to make sure she knew all her options;-) LOL

Don't think about the lack of posting! I've posted on here before and had zero response.... Which yes, can be upsetting.... But I e gotten loads of compliments on the same things when people have seem in person! No telling with an e-audience! People miss posts. I think it's fabulous and I noticed the unique binding straight away! I thought it was a artistic and awesome touch! But to give you choices.... I'll take this one and you can make her a different one ;-) I'm helpful like that!

Ibtreerock

So, I did some IG stalking.... The only one I thought was in the same league of awesomeness as yours was - https://instagram.com/p/45xSTPMwI4/ ....no offense if anyone here is in the same swap... I only looked at the first page of images.

Caribousmom

How did I miss this one!?!? It is awesome!! I love it. And if your swap partner doesn't like it, I will gladly take it off your hands!!

HawkFan

Thank you Ibtreerock ! True directed me to the blog of the woman who created the quilt you linked to above. I don't think she made it for this swap - someone in the swap who is a swimmer is trying to get a pattern made from it and I may try my hand at drafting something at some point since my daughter is a swimmer. There are some amazing ones that are for the swap - a wonderful seahorse and a couple of octopi that I love

I'm not too worried that my partner won't like the mini since I really hit an awful lot of her likes. It just seemed odd that she posts quite a bit and swaps a lot but she must not watch other projects in her swaps - maybe she wants to be surprised. I try to comment on them all (in my group) and of course am very curious which, if any of them, will be coming to me.

HawkFan

Caribousmom Thanks Wendy. This one might be a wee bit difficult to part with smile

Ibtreerock

I found the blog! I love her description of the quilt, hilarious! I can't wait to see what you get!

Mymble

So amazing - just catching this now - love everything you've done here and if she doesn't like it can I get a ticket for the raffle?

HawkFan

Mymble Thank you Margaret. I'm starting to get addicted to swaps!

Mymble

HawkFan Ha Ha- very easy to do;)))- but I think getting one of your creations would be awesome - shall I tell you when my birthday is ??????

Quilterinmotion

Ssss.wweet!!! OMG, how could she not at least click Like! She probably doesn't go in regularly to see what others are posting; I think that because I'm pretty bad about checking to see what others are posting. Embarassing to admit since I love it when people "like" my posts on IG. She's going to love it and if not, I'll take it.

HawkFan

Quilterinmotion Thank you Marsha. When I'm busy or traveling, I tend to only check on those I feel I know better - mostly people from Threadbias. I was just so surprised as she does a lot of swaps and I assumed everyone was like me and wanted to see what all was out there and speculate about which one was coming to me. That's what I get for assuming wink It is easy to keep up with the swaps though because most of us use the hashtag assigned so you're only searching for one thing. She may be waiting until closer to the ship date too since several people haven't posted yet. I just need to be patient!!

Seeneed

Oh my gosh this is so lovely. You must be so pleased with the result. Love the fabric choices and beach shacks are just such a great subject. You did and awesome job!!!!!!!!

HawkFan

Thank you Seeneed - I am very happy with it and I think I hit all the marks my partner was looking for. I never would have thought to do beach shacks if she hadn't put it down on her list

Quilt455

Just love, love, love this one

HawkFan

Quilt455 Thanks Cathie!

Ibtreerock

HawkFan , maybe that's why she hasn't commented.... She suspects it's hers and is playing dumb

HawkFan

Ibtreerock Could be...I am trying to be careful about not being overly enthusiastic about one or two particular minis because it's likely they won't be coming to me and I don't want to make my partner feel bad. I don't think my partner has commented on any of the group's projects. No matter what, it's been fun

True

Oh my I am so excited she made that comment!!!

Ibtreerock

Yeah!!!!

HawkFan

Ibtreerock True I have to admit I was pretty excited and thrilled to see her comment
