Description

This is a wall quilt I started a couple years ago when messing around with fusible applique.  I loved it but had no clue how to finish as knew once done I could not applique each cutout and survive but did not know how to FMQ so felt stuck.  I dug it out and got some options out for a border as thought I would add them and maybe have it be my first try at FMQ...we shall see;-)

Update 6-14-12 this is not done and far from perfect but I am ok with that...I just jumped in with FMQ and saw where it took me.  Realized quickly I was a bit in over my head between larger size, not knowing what wanted to do and obstacles of different shapes.  So made it harder to keep stitches controlled and same size and looks smooth but as I did it decided I would use green FMQ to create the concept of other leaves and the shape of the tree.  And then in grass to create more thread grass.  Because of it being a more artistic endeavor I think it works (well that is what I am telling myself;-) but also it has always been a project way outside my comfort zone so I just keep going with it!  Want to do some FMQ in white between tree and grass and then do borders.  I hit the border with green on one spot and was even able to let it go saying "those darn trees grow however they want;-)  I will bind in the blue.

Update 6-24-12 All quilted and binding is on just needs to be hand sewn.  I found a new way to join binding ends and I LOVE it...did it for last lap quilt and worked perfectly and I just did it for this plus the ten mug rugs and nailed it each time!  That has never happened to me before...

Updated 7-15-12 Done and will be hung in my office tomorrow:-)

Wow, Mary - this is really stunning .I love those blues and purples...and the border fabric you have chosen is perfect. Can't wait to see this one completed.

Kirstenblake

Gorgeous...glad you pulled it back out and decided to work on it again. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Chrissybugs

Beautiful, True. Can't wait to see it finished!

True

Thank you! This was a real experiment and departure for me...and I loved it but then was stuck. I found a website late last night that showed some ideas for using FMQ to finish something like this...so will be trying it out once borders are on. Have to decide which fabrics to use, order, etc. so many decisions;-)

Kirstenblake

I love the grass quilting! Good for you for jumping in and keep going...

Ormondbeach

This is beautiful! Your quilting really enhances the piece!

True

Thank you Kirstenblake and Ormondbeach ... And I am so good at the FMQing...ok that was my dream last night but someday!! But I still do like it... Have to say when I figured out how I wanted to do it I felt brilliant...as you can tell does not take too much to make me happy!!!;-)

Ormondbeach

Isn't it the greatest feeling when it clicks & you can "see" how you want to quilt a piece? Hands down, that's my favorite part now.

Caribousmom

Love the grass! This works great, Mary! The quilting totally enhances this piece of art - display it with pride!!!

Mymble

This is so beautiful- really creative fabric choices and your design is wonderful- everything works- love it:)

Thesewingchick

Its looking good! I love the thread grass - great idea. Free motion quilting takes a lot of patience and practice before you feel comfortable with it. You are off to a great start!!!

Chrissybugs

Awesome quilt! I love it! I have a thing about quilted trees and this one is great. I love the color choices. Good for you to be brave enough to try something new and to post it!

Terryt1955

True So what is your new method for joining binding endings? I always sweat that part out!

True

Terryt1955 It is from Carol Doak's book on paper piecing. She has you mark the ends in a specific way and use those marks to guide you...I will see if I can find online anywhere and share it. I am not sure if I wrote it out without pictures it would make sense. Stay tuned

Kirstenblake

Love the finished quilt! Great job with your FMQing.

Starspry

This is beautiful! I just love the trees and grass :)

Carolmarie thank you and yes I FMQ this one...I have found I do not like it as much on some of my more traditional quilts but for quilts like this and some other I consider more artsy I am really glad I have learned it enough to use it on them.

Quilt455

I love the quilting on this. That is my new goal is to learn to free motion quilt.

True

Quilt455 I only can do it on small pieces and then not all that well...but for this kind of quilt I love it.

Purlewe

This is truly lovely. It just makes me want to shout, GROW!

Quilt455

True, I am goingnto start small too with the machine quilting. Going to make some mug rugs, after my finger heals. I now know why people use a glove when using a rotary cutter. Grrr

True

Oh Quilt455 what did you do?!! I do not use a glove but I am so terrified of cutting myself with the rotary cutter...hope you are ok!

Quilt455

Well I am not used to working with such little pieces of fabric and was cutting a 1 1/2 in square and oooops my finger got to close to the cutter. 2 hours in urgent care and a few stiches later, my finger is back together. Yes, now I am afraid of the cutter and will always, always use a glove from this point on. Whoever I decide to give that mug rug too better love it cause blood and tears really did go into it. lol But I am really fine. thanks for asking.

Pompom

This is a stunning quilt.

True

Pompom Thank you I love it. I have it hanging in my office at work and love seeing it...also have Luminous there and can truly not believe how happy it makes me to see them all the time.
