Description

I learned how to make hexies in 2010 at my first Portland Modern Quilt Guild meeting, and had so much fun making a hexie Squid quilt that I started this Dragon Quilt.  I'm making it for my hubby who has been super supportive of my sewing habits, and who was born in the year of the Dragon (Chinese astrology).

Update 7/25/12:  Continuing to sew the strips together... still have 10 to go to get to the halfway point, but it's slowly coming along.

Update: 8/26/12: Yep... this type of project does take time.  I'm still sewing strips together, but I'm 3 past the halfway point!  At least now each strip will be smaller than the next ~ and I'm sewing faster now that my hands and fingers are getting used to it.  Uploading pics to show the backside of the quilt to show a little of the stitching.   Starting to contemplate how I'm going to actually quilt it when the top is finished ~ good thing I still have time to think about all my options ;)

Update 10/1/12:  I have 6 strips left to sew onto this quilt to complete the hexie part of the top!!!  I'm going to finish tonight ~ super happy!  It's getting harder and harder to handle as it gets bigger.  Time to start thinking about HOW I'm going to quilt it.

10/5/12:  Hexies are all sewn together!  The next step is pulling all the foundation papers out and adding a border.  I plan on showing it at the next Portland Modern Quilt Guild meeting ~ just sayin':smile:

10/25/12:  Top is complete and photographed ~ time to consider how to quilt it!

11/30/12:  Just got back from JUST QUILTING where Nancy Stovall basted my quilt on her longarm.  This will keep it very stable while I wrestle it into my machine for a little free motion quilting as well as some hand quilting.  SUPER excited to start this next stage.

12/31/12:  Last day of the year ~  Happy New Year everybody!!  I've finally started quilting this dragon.  Did straight line quilting around the borders, and now have started a wood grain free motion pattern in the background.  Not perfect by far... getting over myself and just having fun now.  And because of that, this will go faster than before!  Here I go...

1/27/13:  Still quilting!  Machine quilted the whole background... DENSELY!  Now working on the dragon proper... hand sewing french knots for quilting.  So far so good!

2/20/13:  CELEBRATION TIME!!!!  I'm done, I'm done, I'm done!  I got the basting out and did the binding this week.  I'm bringing it to the next Portland Modern Quilt Guild meeting 2/21 if you wanna see it in person... otherwise you'll have to wait till I get some GOOD photos taken and posted (should be soon!).

Wow- I thought I'd seen hexagons but this is awesome- my little pile of random hexies ( for which I have no project as of yet!) is bowing to your hexagon empire:)))) I think your husband is going to love the quilt!

Caribousmom

OMG - I am amazed, impressed and blown away!!! This is going to be a one of a kind quilt for sure - awesome! I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the sheer number of hexies you have made for this!!!

Kirstenblake

Gorgeous. I'm blown away by all your hexies!!

Gail

Thanks! FYI this quilt is going to be made of 3,942 1/2" hexies

True

OMG how long did it take you to make that many hexies??!!!!

Caribousmom

Okay, now I am overwhelmed LOL! And I thought I was a little crazy when I cut out fourteen hundred 3.5" triangles!! But the result will be fabulous!

Dtscrapper

holy smokes! This is incredible!

Juline

A-maz-ing. The hexies are so tiny! How big will the finished quilt be? Did you create the pattern?

Gail

Jennifleur blush thanks Jenn! Yes, we should definitely get together soon for some sewing time!!

Mouseinmypocket

Love how it came out! Can't wait to see how you decide to quilt it.

Quilt455

This is totally amazing!!!!

Skunklady

wonderful accomplishment. It is beautiful.

Posyp

this is amazing and from someone who had a bad experience of hexies as a child, I am nearly tempted back to them. What a great use of them.

twistedandloose

OMG Hexies are on my bucket list. Haven't had the nerve to try them yet. You are amazing. I've never seen anything like it!

Sewcrazy

WOW! This is unbelievable! I'm at a loss for words.

Gail

Sewcrazy Seshlaman Posyp Skunklady Quilt455 Mouseinmypocket Thanks everybody!! I'm loving all the feedback ~ you guys rock!

Rebeccajeffsmith

Truly amazing. This makes my grandmother's flower garden quilt look lame. What a gorgeous piece of art you made!

Kazkitty

O_O This is absolutely incredible!!!

Sariecherries

Shut up!! This is amazing!!!

Rebecca

This is simply amazing!! Question for you - did you cut/punch holes in the middle of your paper pieces to make them easier to remove at the end?

Sblprl1

so cool!

Gail

Rebecca Yes I did ~ best idea ever!! Saved myself A LOT of time in the end. I also only basted from the backside (not through the paper to the front), so I didn't even need to take out the basting to get them out.

Rebecca

Ok, awesome! Thanks! I'm working on some 1" hexies now and had noticed that in one of your pictures. I'm just basting from the back as well and I think going forward I'm going to put some holes in the middle of the papers. I'm guessing the smaller the hexy the harder they are to get out too. I can see how the holes would make it much easier since you have someplace to pop it out rather than trying to get ahold of the sides right up next to the seams.

Zeenath

WOW.... the patience and the determination are astounding!

Zeenath

and did I mention PERSEVERANCE!

Jennifleur

Well I'M super excited to see it and YOU on Monday. Woo! ^^

Caribousmom

You are so close! I can't wait to see how you quilt this one!

True

Continues to just amaze me...cannot wait to see it done!

Skunklady

Wow - quilting begins. Fantastic. Is that your studio?

Gail

Skunklady OMGosh... I WISH that was my studio! That is the studio at Just Quilting in SE Portland, OR ~ the Dragon was professionally basted so that my quilting will hopefully be better in the end. Still practicing, I can only seem to get about 5 stitches per inch, I would like to get it up to at least 7 before starting.

Jodyrose

My first quilt was a king size grandmothers flower garden and this piece makes that seem VERY elementary...awesome job!!!

True

This is a work of art and amazes me more every time I see it!!

Sewnsew

Keep on enjoying the process. It's looking marvellous.

Tejesarita

WOW!!! Your unique quilt is amazing! Just fantastic work and you are so talented with tiny hexagons! x Teje

Staceynapier

Absolutely beautiful - I'm starting up a hexagon bee if you are interested - check out the post with details. Would love to have you!!

Rebecca

Stunning french knots. heart

Capetowngirl

Well that is absolutely stunning and awe inspiring. You have such patience to make all those hexies. The end result is something to be very proud of. Did you design this yourself or have a pattern? Well done. Your husband must be delighted with his quilt.

True

Cannot wait for more pictures since seeing it in person is not an option;-). Truly amazing!

Terryt1955

OMG it's as if you gave birth! What an amazing finish. Can't pop in to Portland so pictures will have to suffice. WHat will you do when the let down sets in?

Bowhows

You'd better lock your doors because I'm planning on breaking and entering to steal that. Tell your husband he'd better not give me any trouble. It is absolutely gorgeous!

Gail

Terryt1955 Totally ~ and thank you! Not sure what I'm doing next... but I know I'm not done with hexies yet!! ;)

Gail

Bowhows laughing Thank You!
