Description

I decided to make a bag for my mother's birthday - she loves going to the beach and this bag is a huge (20" wide, 17" tall) bag which is perfect for the beach. It even has a little zippered pocket to put a cell phone or some dollar bills...

The pattern is from Pink Sand Beach Designs and it is pretty easy...although I did break two (yes TWO) needles stitching this bag because of bulky seams. Yikes! Unfortunately, immediately after finishing it, I noticed that the top back fabric is upside down! I was so upset...and then I just thought, "well, it is handmade and not perfect, but still pretty and usable" - so it is going to my mom anyway...and I hope she will be able to look past that one mistake and enjoy it!

I made one adaptation to the pattern - I used fabric for the straps instead of webbing :)

Fabric is Lucy's Crab Shack.

OMG I love this and personally I would not have noticed it being upside down for about five years or so if it was given to me...I am betting she will love it. If she doesn't give her my address;-)

Thanks True - I'm glad the mistake wasn't too obvious for you (it is the last picture I posted here). My sister says because some of the shirts and shorts are upside down even when the fabric is correctly positioned, that it is not too noticeable!

True

I agree with your sister I really had to look for it...and again I would be so blown away that someone made it for me that is all I would care about. It sure is cute fabric and the perfect use for it!

I agree...some of the clothing is not upside down so really...no one will know. This is so cute Wendy. Your mom will love it.

Wendy, your mom is going to love it. It is really very, very pretty. I would never have known the fabric was upside down and I've seen it. And I am glad you use fabric for the straps instead. Love it.

Juicyapplecreations

Adorable...love this fabric.

What fabric is upside down? Seriously? I guess being spatially dyslexic has it's advantages. And this bag is so darn cute!!! I make my straps out of fabric too. It's just one more chance to show off a cute design. And I think it's softer on the hands when you have the bag loaded to the max.

Caribousmom

Thank you everyone for making me feel better about my mistake!!! Terryt1955 I agree about fabric being softer on the hands. This is a big bag, and I could not imagine toting it around with that rough webbing! Plus, I wanted to use the fabric in the collection with all the names of the beaches :)

Gail

Great bag~ trying to lose my fear of sewing anything 3D... this bag is inspiring ;)

Caribousmom

Gail you are the hexie queen - this is a walk in the park compared to that!!! You can do it!! Thanks for the compliment :)

Starspry

What a fun tote!

Caribousmom

Thanks Starspry !

Carolmarie - thank you! I have no idea how to avoid breaking needles when one encounters TWO seams which include cotton fabric, fleece interfacing, Decorbond and bias tape!!! That really was my only complaint about this pattern - those bulky, hard to sew seams!
