Description

  • Made with fabrics I bought while in Hawaii last winter with my husband. Except for the borders which I purchased recently to finish the top. Just waiting for inspiration to hit me for backing. I'd really like to try voile, but it's pricey. (I tend to use bed sheets from Ikea for backings because I always balk at the price for all that yardage!!!). I need 4 yards even of 54" voile according to my quilt calculator.
  • August 10.... Made a pieced back last night actually had more white sheet scraps than I thought but still liked the idea of a scrappy strip of colour. Going to start to quilt it this afternoon while my little scooterbug (hopefully) sleeps!
  • Later on, August 10, well it's quilted! I went with a big stipple, thinking about lazy blue pool water ripples while I quilted. Took a quick picture and now it's time to make Friday night pizza!
  • August 11... Finished hand stitching the binding this morning, buried knots, washed, dried and photographed.  So happy my kitty came to join me.  She is mostly an outdoor kitty since hubby is allergic, so I don't have any quilt pictures with my kitty in them like most quilters seem to have!  She was hanging around today and sat on my quilt for me.  So pleased she likes it!  (And so do I.  Hubby says it's his new favourite, too!)

I love this quilt it is gorgeous and the mix of Terrain with the other fabrics is wonderful I have never used voile so can not offer any help there...but here you on cost of fabric for backing! Sometimes you can find a good sale on a fabric that works online...

CoraQuiltsCarla

Ummm. When I uploaded the project there was something like "Is your project in distress?" and I filled that out. I think that's what did it!

Yes Carolmarie Alex added that option at bottom of new projects as well as where you can update a project so we can ask for help and let people know we need it...it is cool eh?!

Caribousmom

Oh, this is wonderful - LOVE the Terrain fabric borders too. Re: backs...have you ever pieced a back? If you have leftover fabric from the front, it is a great way to use it up AND you will not need as much fabric to purchase for the back. I like to use left over blocks (or make an extra block or two from the front), then use a solid (or a fabric which reads solid) to get those blocks to pop...re: using voile - have voile in my stash but have never made anything with it yet! It is so wonderful and drapey. I don't see why it wouldn't be a good choice for a back (other than the price which you pointed out!)

I love the colors in this quilt!

Thanks everyone! Caribousmom I have pieced packs before.... Good idea, I should pull out what I have left and take a look. Ok, you've got my mind in gear. Somehow I latched onto the idea, must be all one fabric. Actually I had originally thought to use that big Terrain print for the back, then where I was ordering it from didn't have enough, then I decided to make it bigger and use it for border instead... I see what my trail of thinking was now!

Caribousmom

Good luck - I can't wait to see what you come up with (and I am on board with you regarding that terrain fabric for the back - too bad you couldn't find more, but it makes an awesome border)!

CoraQuiltsCarla

Well, Caribousmom I could find more! But not at the price I was purchasing it for, that ship has sailed :) I haven't had a chance to work on it yet, but I am liking the pieced back idea, thanks so much!

Caribousmom

You're welcome - happy to help!

After seeing Wendy's quilts, I may never do a plain back quilt again. She does such a great job it is like two different quilts in one. Pieced backing it the way I would go too. This is so beautiful.

I have sewn a good deal with voile- clothing- I used to smock for my girls and it smocks beautifully- what you have to take into consideration with voile is that it is a more fragile fabric- so if this quilt will be used and loved and washed a lot, you might be running the risk of the fabric wearing down- especially at seams- I used to french seam my voile dresses- otherwise voile is a beautiful fabric.

CoraQuiltsCarla

Thanks for the advice Mymble on voile! And Quilt455 , I think that's the way to go, too. Just have to get on it now!

Rebecca

Beautiful! I love the Terrain fabric you used for borders. I have some of the same stashed away waiting for the right inspiration to strike.

I like your idea of voile for the back, but agree with Mymble, I'd be worried it wouldn't hold up with heavy use. Wendy's pieced backs are fantastic, lots of inspiration and ideas there. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Caribousmom

LOVE how you did the back! So fresh and the perfect compliment to the front! BRAVO!!

CoraQuiltsCarla

Thanks Caribousmom ! My hubby is off with a handful of little ones this afternoon and I am just about to put the 3 year old down for a nap! Then it's just me and my free motion foot, woohoo!
