Description

My mom asked me to make her a wall hanging for her townhouse in Black Mountain, NC.   The home has a 2-story ceiling with a loft area and the high wall is crying out for some color!  She chose the fabrics and the design, and I think she chose very well!! The design came from a picture of a quilt shop in a magazine so I don't know what it is. I just looked at the picture and said, "I can do that."  The magazine is Quilt Sampler Spring 2011, page 7.  The fabrics are an assortment of Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mabley and Amy Butler.  I am placing them randomly, but paying attention to equal spacing of the dominant colors.  The finished size will be about 36" square.  I still need to find a complementary sashing color.

Updated - the borders are Kona cotton in "charcoal"

Welcome back!!! And this is going to be gorgeous...love the fabrics and this will be stunning!

Wonderful color placement! It looks so random and yet I know you were attentive to the balance of color!

Thanks!! Any suggestions on sashing color? Her walls are a mustardy gold so I am thinking a dark, almost black gray (Kona Pepper) or a very dark teal. I have cut the stripe for the binding already.

Looking at it without the sashing fabric by them I vote for the gray BUT would have to see them next to it to truly vote:-)

Caribousmom

Fabulous! I would go with the dark gray which I think would set these blocks off perfectly!

True Caribousmom Thanks - always good to have some other opinions :)

I think Gray would make the blocks really pop. Beautiful

So is that Kona Pepper you ended up using? I've never seen that before but I really like it. It's not as harsh as black can sometimes be but yet still gives the great "wow" impact that a black imparts. Love it!!!

Just saw this on your blog while waiting for my plane! Love it...

Terryt1955 I ended up using charcoal. The pepper was still too black. This may be my basic black from now on...not that I use black very often!

Terryt1955

Oh good. I saw the charcoal at MLQS and really liked it but was wondering if the pepper was even better. I agree, this can easily be the new black.

I love this. Love how the bright colors pop!
