WOW gorgeous...did you use same method as Rebecca? This will be amazing when done, well it is already amazing. How large is it and how long will it take to hand quilt it. Just wonderful:-)
This is beautiful. I love your color choices.
Your quilt is beautiful. A zig-zag rainbow.
Thanks everyone. Choosing the colors was really fun. The construction was a bit of a challenge, but it got done, so I am happy about that. I measured it and it s 32 x 44.
Really great- love your color choices and it looks like a lot of very careful precision sewing- great job!
Every time I see a zigzag I want to try one. Just love the look of this one! I can't fathom being able to make all those triangles match up. For me I need to gt some more experience under my belt before tackling this one. Good for you on your success!
Thanks again for all the nice comments. While the quilt is challenging, I did hit my stride after the first 3 rows and it went more smoothly as I went along. Since I am a speed-piecer, I needed to slow down and be attentive.
This quilt makes my heart sing! I might need to put this as a back burner project for one day.
Thank you, Purlewe . I kind of felt that way myself when I got the idea...had to move on it!
Oh this is SO pretty! I love the rainbow effect! Absolutely stunning!
Another one I somehow missed! Love zig zags and this one is terrific - especially the rainbow of colors. Really lovely!
Thanks, Wendy. I kind of want to get to the quilting soon!
Ooohh! Zig Zags and rainbow! I love this! I want a zigzag quilt, but I'm kinda scared of trying to make one.
Thanks, Loraclare . Please go ahead and try one. It was a new thing for me to learn, but well worth it.
Oooh, it looks gorgeous already Jan! Are you going to use contrasting perle cotton? It will look awesome when it's done!
Thank you, Katisquilting . I will be using perle cotton but I am not sure if I will use contrast, or color-match the thread to each color in the quilt. I guess it will depend on how many colors of perle I can find!
I think it would be really fun if you did contrast in the same colors as the top. Just and idea
It's gorgeous! The wonderful thing about perle cotton is that it comes in far, far more colours than standard quilting thread. Plus it shows up nicely, which is good when you've been to all that effort. I use perle #8 and I think it's either a #8 or a #9 between needle, with a standard rocking stitch but slightly larger stitches (8 to the inch on the top side) than I'd do with standard quilting thread. It's easier and it goes along faster.
As for the colours, what quilting design are you planning to use? You could use different colours in different sections, but then that depends on how far each motif covers different fabric colours. Or black would be a classic choice. Curvy designs would look lovely here, and, erm, you know that I'm trying to convert everyone to Welsh quilting, right?
LOL Tenar . I have bought #5 perle and color matched the fabrics. I plan on quilting with the design...1/4 inch inside the seam line. I think I will need an embroidery needle because the perle is thicker.
Apparently you can get betweens going down to a #5, I just checked on the John James website. Do you use rocking stitch or stab stitch?
With this quilting, I will likely use more or less a stab stitch. My plan is for a fairly large stitch...about 1/4 inch both for the stitch and for the space between. I will look at my betweens and see what I have...running out of time for shopping. :-) We leave for a trip in the morning.
Makes sense. I suspect that with a certain thickness of thread, you'll reach a point where rocking stitch just isn't practical, even if you do prefer it most of the time. From my experience with perle #8, the main thing I'd say to watch out for is burying the knot. A good thick thread with nice big stitches is going to look wonderful on this quilt!
Tenar , thank you for all your input. I appreciate the kind comments. I did find a #3 between...will try it but also have the embroidery needles for back up.
Your hand stitching just adds to the loveliness of this quilt!
Oh I am drooling over your hand stitching. It just puts this quilt over the top with it. LOVE!
Love the hand quilting! This came out so beautifully!
Caribousmom Thank you! I have the binding made and this afternoon I will machine sew it on, then do the hand finishing while watching football tonight.
I love it, this is beautiful.
Oh my that's beautiful, I like that you used the richer darker colours for your rainbow and not the almostneon kind. And the quilting looks really good.
Strandkorbtraum Thank you! The colors choices were based on what was in my stash...I didn't shop for this one until the backing.
I love the colors of this quilt! It's stunning! Your stitching really sets it off; I like how you matched colors so well (thread & fabric).
Rebeccajeffsmith Thank you! I had fun finding the right thread colors...it was a challenge with some of the reds.
I see your rainbow zigzag! I think it looks lovely, and I love your hand-quilting!
