How darling!! I had a cap for my first son that came with a poem and had been made with a man's handkerchief. I was supposed to give it to him for his wedding day, but it is still packed away. This one is just beautiful and I love that this baby will have a connection to the past.
Janquilter I had received the same thing! In fact I just came across it when I was painting my dresser and had to clear out all the drawers. I had forgotten all about it. Sounds like we need to restart that tradition for our kids having babies.
Mary you were so smart to have scooped up the handkerchiefs and make this darling bonnet. Your nephew will appreciate it I'm sure!
I have four sisters and with some of the handkerchiefs I want to make each of them a quilt using mom's hand -kerchiefs.
Just curious, will you need to back the handkerchief with interfacing to give it some extra body so it wears better? What a great idea to incorporate the handkerchiefs for the quilt tops for your sisters. Special!
I'm thinking I will need to use interfacing...I've also wondered about stitching them on top of a fabric square sort of like an applique. I bought cheap handkerchiefs from the dollar store so I could practice without ruining my "special" hankerchiefs.
I have a quilt top that uses half a handkerchief as the lower portion of a basket. It is really pretty. That might work for you, Mary .
That sounds cute...where can I find the pattern?
Mary , I posted a handkerchief quilt as well as the info to find the pattern. It is in a book by Nancy Martin
