Description

I was trying to clean up my sewing space and decided to get my scraps in order.  Which of course led to me wanting to use my scraps instead of cleaning.  I've always wanted to try out hand quilting and embroidery and applique, so I figured I'd try all at once with this little mini project.

AUGUST 31, 2012: The majority of the hand quilting is done, but I need to switch colors and do the perimeter around the section with the squares.  I'll also be trying out some other fun stuff in the borders, but something very minimal.  I need to find some binding fabric.  I'd like something orange to tie in with the orange stitching around the Texas applique.

SETPTEMBER 1, 2012: So that really bad, dark last photo I added shows the scraps I'm going to use for a skinny pieced binding.  My original goal with this was to use what I had and not buy anything.  So really that's going to be the way to go here, by continuing to use up my scraps!  This is actually really fun.  I'm pretty much obsessed with using up my scraps now.  That's a good thing!  No more buying fabric until November at the Houston International Quilt Festival!  Well, unless I need more white that is.  :)  It still needs some more quilting before the binding.  No sewing today though, so it will have to wait until tomorrow!

SEPTEMBER 2, 2012: I've decided not to do any embroidery in the borders because the pieced binding is really busy and fun enough.  Other than adding a hanging sleeve and label to the back, it's DONE!  I am really pleased with how it turned out.  It's 18" x 18".

Your hand stitching is inspiring. It makes all the difference and turns this quilt into a wow quilt.

Your use of these 'sea-glass colors with the white is beautiful. I agree on the handstitching, nice!

How cute! I love using what I have to make something special. This is a great use of fabrics and a wonderful nod to your state. Your stitching is wonderful!

Can't wait to see your binding choice. I'm weird, sometimes I like the binding the best!

Howtobejenna

So cute! I love the details.

Love the scrappy binding...

Tenar

Lovely stitching. What thread is that, perle #8? I'm a recent convert to using thicker thread myself.

Kristananne

Tenar That's actually DMC embroidery floss. I was just using what I had laying around. It's a wall hanging, so it will be okay, but someone told me that the embroidery floss doesn't hold up to repeated washing, so I'd definitely use some perle #8 (or even #5!) in that application.
