Description

Carol Doak (of paper piecing fame) http://caroldoak.com began a BOM Mystery Quilt in May, 2012. We just received the "mystery" layout of the blocks we've been making each month since May, 2012.  It is now March, 2013 and I have some wonderful blocks.

It was a two fabric BOM, meaning you chose two coordinating fabrics, one of which should 'read' as a white and another color.  We were to use only those two throughout the quilt blocks.

The blocks were not the mystery as you were given a new block pattern each week. The mystery was in how the blocks would go together to make the quilt design after the 12 months of blocks are completed.

She has a Yahoo group I belong to and we can share our completed block photos there.  Here, today, I am putting up the layout of the blocks as Carol Doak planned them.  I never anticipated the large star that appears in the middle of the quilt.  I have a few "white" pieces to cut and fit into the white openings you see in the photo and that will be done soon.

Carol's patterns, her cutting instructions, and her Yahoo Group are all wonderful.  If you enjoy paper piecing, I think you would enjoy this group.

5/18/2013   I have completed the Carol Doak BOM Mystery Quilt.   I am so very happy with it.  I had plenty of fabric and even enough left over I think I can make a few more blocks, repeating a few I should say, to use on the backing.  I bought another batik thinking I might want a darker border but decided I like the 60" finished size so I will use the darker for the backing with a few pieced blocks for interest.

7/15/14  I finally finished this Carol Doak Mystery BOM Quilt.  It was all quilted on my home sewing machine, a 1999 Bernina Virtuoso.  Much of the quilting was done using the walking foot for straight lines.   I worked on the quilting for about three days off and on.  I'm happy with the finished quilt.  I think this is the longest it has even taken me from start to finish!

Love these especially one with whirly gig thing in middle! These fabrics are so pretty as well! When do you head south?

Janquilter

Pretty fabrics! I like the variety of block designs.

Kirstenblake

I love your fabric choices!

Quilterinmotion

True Thanks; I like the next one really well and hope it get at it (September block) in the next week or so---before October 1. We will head out about the 9th of October I think.

Quilterinmotion

Kirstenblake That's what's so nice about the Carol Doak quilt along; every month a completely different block. Clever ones too.

I thought the two fabrids went together pretty well.

Janquilter Thanks Jan.

Two more BOMs done for the Carol Doak Mystery BOM, September and October. I'm getting ahead so I won't have to play "catch-up" after we spend a few weeks traveling in October to Alabama.

I'm happy to have caught up to my BOM month. I just put November up the other day. December is just a few random pieces for when we put it together .so it's not shown here.

Quilterinmotion

I'm ahead of the game this time. I have my January Carol Doak Mystery BOM done on January 1st!

Love all of these your piecing of them is amazing.

Rebeccajeffsmith

I really like this. It's all paper pieced? I have a couple of her books. Great patterns and beautiful fabric.

Quilterinmotion

True , Rebeccajeffsmith , thank you! Yes, all the designs are paper pieced. Carol Doak is wonderful for her patterns and cutting directions. Next month we get the mystery part of the quilt...how all the blocks fit together for a design!

WOW! Love the lay out and it is gorgeous...again you fabric choices are perfect

Terryt1955

Being late to the show I was able to see all the blocks individually and then the grand ending (layout). That was so cool. These blocks are beautiful! I've used this same fabric(the batik) for tote bags as gifts and it is a very pretty batik. Kind of earthy/hippy which was perfect for the recipients.

Quilterinmotion

True , Terryt1955 , thanks for the kind words. I love the layout too, and love especially it was such a surprise. I didn't envision that very large star in the middle. A friend did it along with me and hers was beautiful too. I think it's impossible not to get a beauty with Carol Doak designs. Terry, I'm going to get some solid or marbled fuschia for one border. I think that will be awesome and bring out the fuschia in the batik. Thanks again, ladies.

Terryt1955

Tha's exactly what I did for the lining of the bags and it did indeed bring out the fuschia in the batik. Can't wait to see your borders added to this beauty.

Sewexcitedquilts

This is stunning. Love the fabrics you choose, how large is it? It looks like a BOM I am sorry I missed.

Quilterinmotion

Sewexcitedquilts , thanks so much. I'm sorry I didn't measure it when I laid out the blocks. They are 12" finished blocks and there are ten of them plus the setting pieces. I will measure when I lay it out again with the remaining rectangles, etc. I must go find that fushcia border before I can put it all together. It WAS a BOM and such fun! Doing one block a month makes it seem like such an easy project.

Quilterinmotion

It's complete! The Carol Doak BOM is over and I've got a lovely 60" completed top. I love it and I'm eager to do the back now. I think I'm going to put together three more blocks and use them on the back with another fabric I was considering for a second border. I don't think it needs a second border so I've got a backing material. I loved doing this BOM and recommend Carol's classes and BOMs.

Gorgeous!

Terryt1955

Beautiful! And I like what you did with the border. It doesn't distract you from the gorgeous center. Make sure to show us the back when you get there!

Dzirin

Very nice

Quilterinmotion

True , Terryt1955, Dzirin,
Thanks for the kind words. I highly recommend Carold Doak patterns. Terry, I will show you the back when I get there!
