Description

I picked this pattern because it was a block of the month.  I wanted to try out at BOM so I headed to the local shop.  It looked complicated and I explained that I had never done applique before.  The owner told me this was an easy pattern to do and that she completed the whole quilt top in 3 days.  Needless to say she was more interested in the sale then helping her customer - I guess that is why she is no longer in business.

I did know what I would do with the quilt when it was finished.  It just is not my style and would not go with my house or my holiday decorations.  So, after staring at it a while, I realized that it would be perfect for my sister-in-law.

In the end, I fell in love with the process.  I love the hand work and I really enjoyed the applique.  Applique is not one of my favorite techniques.

So the appliques and the embroidery were all done by hand.  Because I didn't really know what I was doing when I started, I even appliqued the tiny black eyes, the carrot noses, and the buttons.  Half way through I thought of using embellishments, but it was too late - I wanted it to be consistant throughout so I trudged on.

My sister-in-law loved it.  She is not a quilter or a crafter.  She did not realize it was handmade and someone had to tell her (I was in Tennessee that Christmas, so I wasn't around to tell her).  She thinks the quilt to "double-sided".  But I didn't have the heart to tell her that it is just backing fabric; something I found on sale in matching colors. She keeps it on her bed year round because of it.

What a beautiful job you did...and how mean of the owner to tell you this was easy! Very impressive finish and it sounds like it is well loved!

This is actually really cute - and good that you found someone who would love it since you knew it wasn't your style!

Funny she told you it was easy enough to complete in 3 days! Even with machine applique that would be hard!

I heard you talk on your podcast about the progress of this as you were making it. This is the first time that I have seen a photo of it. I LOVE it! You did a great job!

Too bad 'we' didn't know each other back then because then maybe you would have given it to me! ha! You know I love it and I still chuckle about when you realized you could have used embellishments ~ however ~ your skills are SO much better because you did it all!

Aizome

Wow! What an accomplishment! It's adorable! Your SIL is blessed.
