Description

I joined the Pincushion Swap here because I love swaps and because I love pincushions.  Changing this old saying: "I've never met a pincushion I didn't like" explains it all.  I do collect them, try to keep to smaller ones due to my space restraints.
I am making it for someone; she knows who she is!  I've visited her Projects page and I've visited her Pinterest page.  I think I've chosen one she'll like AND it gave me an opportunity to try a new technique.
Several years ago when my quilt guild in the South was joining the "Hexie" bandwagon, I didn't climb on.  I didn't really think I'd make any as I already have a major hand-piecing project, my DWR (Double Wedding Ring Quilt), queen size, that I'm hand-piecing and will hand-quilt.   So, with my swap partner in mind, I finally climbed aboard the wagon and I LOVE THEM!
I made enough for the pinnie and then kept making more, trying several ways of joining the hexies together. I tried whip-stitching and some stitches showed on the front.  I tried back-stitching and fewer stitches showed.

Your hexie flower is lovely. They are moreish, aren't they? Hand piecing and quilting a DWR is an awesome project. I'm hand piecing and plan on hand quilting a Farmers Wife. How do you back stitch the hexies? I ladder stitched a small hexie project and I found it awkward and went back to whip stitching.

I'm with Carolmarie. I'm looking forward to seeing it, too. I'd love to see your DWR. I'm hand piecing a Farmer's Wife and I plan to hand quilt it. Is back stitching a hexie the same as ladder stitch? When hexies are whip stitched, they do show some stitches at the front no matter how carefully we stitch!

This is looking good and love you are trying something new for your partner!

I went to the jaybird website that Carolmarie mentioned in the Hexie group. Someone there commented about the backstitch so I went to that link and decided to do it. It's just a normal backstitch like in embroidery. Check the Hexie group for the link and then read comments, and then go to her tute on backstitching the hexie.

True : Thanks. I'm glad I read so much about her to find out she likes hexies or I might have never tried them!! Carolmarie : Soon, swapmate, soon!

Sewnsew : Yes, that are like candy...just one more....

Another phenomenal pin cushion. You are killing me! I am so impressed that you took the bull by the horn and mastered these little hexies. Inspirational.

Quilterinmotion I found another way to join hexies without leaving too much showing at the front. http://beeinmybonnetco.blogspot.com.au/2010/04/part-2-of-hexie-tutorial-flowers.html

Thanks for the link, Sewnsew . I'll check it out a little later when I have a bit more time.

Sewnsew

You are welcome. I've not tried it yet, either, but plan to this weekend.

This is a beautiful pincushion. I was really curious to see what you were going to do with the hexies. I really like the color combinations!

Sewnsew

Oh, it looks really lovely. The lace really makes it.

I really like the look of this one. So pretty, and I can just imagine all the different looks you can create from the same pattern. Very nice!

Carolmarie . Hurray! I guessed right then. Now we are both very happy pincushion collectors, Carolmarie. I can't wait to see the one you made for me in person! I will treasure yours as well.
Cfgriffith : Thank you. I think it can be varied many ways. Sewnsew : Thank you very much. Kathie , thanks also. Those are the colors we were given to use and I just happened to have quite a selection of those colors. Thanks for all the kind comments. I'm loving seeing the pincushions as they appear completed, ladies. This is a talented group!

I don't know how I missed the finished pinnie but just saw it today. You really did a fabulous job and what's more I think you picked doing the perfect one for Carolmarie . I envision her to be a gentle lady of the south surrounded by feminine lacy things. The lace you added was icing on the cake!

Terryt1955 . Thank you. I saw that she had it pinned on her Pinterest board and I knew immediately that was the one I wanted to do for her. I think you might have her pegged correctly. Let's see what she says about it!
