This one is A Little Silhouette by Sarah Fielke from her book Quilting From Little Things. It's been on my to do list since last year when I saw this one. I used a solid background, rather than patchwork squares for the background.
I had planned to machine quilt it as I sewed down the applique using herringbone stitch, then stitch in the ditch next to the border. Part way through I changed the foot to a clear embroidery foot……It’s amazing how much difference being able to see where I am going makes….and then realised I hadn’t made a quilt sandwich!
I like herringbone stitch for attaching applique, but am still working out the right stitch length and speed. The only possible thing I can think of doing is starting another applique project to see if I can work it out!
It turned out to be a good thing, as I gave echo quilting a bash....I like it! I will be doing more of it, too. In her book, Sarah Fielke echo quilts hers by hand. I considered it, then decided to give it a bash on the machine.
I’ve named it Night Bird and have decided to keep it as a Halloween project. The flowers remind me of Triffids. This is the third dolly quilt I’ve worked on from this book.
