Blue Bustle Dress Accessories by Bethzilla
What historical costume would be complete without accessories? To complement my blue bustle dress, I made a bag, hat, and hatpins.
That hat pattern is my own, created through trial and error with thick cardstock. It's a buckram and wire base, padded with cotton flannel and covered with the silk I used on the bustle dress. I was very inspired by a Lynn McMasters creation and I took some decorating ideas from her tips. It was lots of fun shopping for flowers and ribbon to trim it! The hat is too small to stay put on my head (this was the style in the 1880's - miniature hats!) so I picked up some hat pin blanks at JoAnn's and raided my bead stash. I made 6 hatpins but only ended up using 3.
I needed some way to carry my modern stuff (phone, keys, cash) and there are no pockets on my dress. The solution was a bag! It's also made in matching silk with a machine embroidered 'E' monogram (for my full name, Elizabeth.) The clasp was a lucky find at Hancock Fabrics. They've since stopped carrying them, as far as I can tell. The bag is lined with the same navy satin as the dress's overskirt.
