Description

I had learned reverse applique when I made my little pincushion for the swap and thought it would be a good technique to make a pumpkin pillow. Of course I was doing this last night at 2 am and didn't have any embroidery floss to finish the details around the pumpkin and the leaves. Don't you just hate having to stop a project because you don't have the needed supplies!

Tonight I hope to finish the embroidery so I can turn it into a pillow. Part of me wants to use the same linen on the backside of  the pillow but another part wants to use a fall print, perhaps a batik in autumn colors. I did get 2 pillow forms today at Joann's in case I want to make a matching pillow. The finished size will be a 16"x16" pillow.

10/20  Was able to almost finish all the embroidery last night while catching up on Homeland (Oh my goodness!). Need to figure out how to do a blanket stitch for the leaves and stem to secure the edges because I just know that fusible web is not going to hold up for a pillow the way my family treats pillows.

10/27 Finished the pillow. It was a bear trying to push the needle through the fusible web on the leaves and stem so I ended up machine stitching on the leaves. It's now keeping the pumpkins company on the front porch. I would jump into making another one but I really need to make some progress on my UFO's.

This is going to be a beautiful pillow cannot wait to see it done! I have no clue how to reverse applique so very impressed-:-)

Mymble

Wow- this is absolutely gorgeous!

Sewnsew

lolol I've done the 2am thing many times! It is looking really fabulous. Love the colours.

Thanks True , Mymble and Sewnsew . I was able to work on the embroidery part last night and am loving this little pumpkin. I had a hard time going thru all the layers of the strip piecing that are undreneath the pumpkin's edge so probably this would have been easier had I just done the traditional applique method. Then again I probably just didn't use the right needle. I'm sure there's something out there with a large eye for thick floss and a super sharp needle point? Any of you handstitchers know?

True

Ok my question about reverse appliqué how do you make your cut out line so perfect?

Caribousmom

what a fun pillow, Terry! I need to learn applique one of these days. Oh, and just have to mention, I stayed with friends in San Rafael on Thursday night and they had me watch two episodes of Homeland...wow! What a great show. I don't get Showtime, so looks like I'll have to rent or buy the DVDs for the show :)

Chrissybugs

Great pillow!

Strandkorbtraum

Perfect for Pumpkin time .. how do you make your Pumkin Pie? (my mind sometimes takes strange turns..)

True

I just love this...it is perfect!

Terryt1955

Strandkorbtraum Funny enough but I pretty much follow the recipe on the back of a Libby's can of pumpkin puree and double the spices they call for. I also make a crust from scratch and have plenty of vanilla bean ice cream and real whip cream for the side. I tried making the puree from scratch ONCE and went back to good ole Libby's!

Thanks True . I'm sitting here twiddling my thumbs debating on jumping into anpther pillow or sitting down and working on my scallop binding for one of my UFO's. Decisions!

Jess

So cute! That's an adorable pillow. Nice hand stitching! Love the chunky thread you used to outline it.

Hach well ... they don't sell canned pumpkin here - I have to make it from scratch.

Conniharns

Terryt..I love your pillow. So pretty. Was this a pattern or did you design yourself?

Terryt1955

Thanks Conniharns . I designed it myself.

Mymble

It came out beautifully :)- really really lovely!

Terryt1955

Thanks Mymble ! Now I'm thinking what I'm going to do for Christmas pillows. They are so satifyingly addictive. Short and sweet projects that have a big bang for the buck impression.

Mymble

Terryt1955 Oh- can't wait- you really have an eye for design so I know they will be super:)

Conniharns

Ok .....so I think you should sell your pattern!!

Terryt1955

You are so funny Conniharns ! I'd give it away if I knew how to do blogs and attach drawn pattern pieces.

Joygross

Your pillow is adorable.

Terryt1955

Of course you can Pin, Carolmarie . I'd be honored. Kitties can be like that. Our hose is cat free due to hubby and kids being really allergic to them. But my dog is just as bad. He'll steal pillows off the couch to snuggle with them.
