Description

Several years ago, I traveled to Thailand on a mission trip for almost three weeks. I came home with rollicking bronchitis (hate those planes!) and was down for about five weeks. Somewhere in the midst of all that, laying on the couch under heavy OTC meds, watching reruns of Simply Quilts, I decided it would be a good idea to make a quilt. I also decided it would be a good idea to make one like I'd seen on Simply Quilts, but not use a pattern. I thought it would be an excellent idea to do all the math myself.

I had great fabric in my stash, so I went to town.

Math and drugs do not mix.

This quilt came out completely whonked. I could never get it square. I brought it to guild show n' tell and said, "This is your quilt. This is your quilt on drugs." It became known as my "cautionary tale" quilt--don't ever try to do math while under the influence. I put it on my shelf for a long time, trying to wait for the day when it would magically square itself up enough to finish.

One of my nieces fell in love with it, though, so I finally finished it up--quilting by check and with great apologies to the longarmer, but she did a great job with it--and it became my niece's Christmas present. I gave it some other name for her, but to tell the truth, I don't remember that name at all. To me, this will always be my "Cautionary Tale Quilt."

What a great story! And even if it is a little wonky the fabric more than makes up for it. Love all the purple going on and that large scale floral is the bomb. Your niece ended up the winner on this one!

Sewnsew

Great story....and I must admit I've done the same thing....but not under the influence of meds. lol It is a marvellous quilt.

True

Ok I love this quilt! So agree the fabric is beyond beautiful and would thrill anyone to own. However I do really love the story behind it!!

Mymble

Love the story- it's a cautionary tale to all of us "jump in and ask questions later" quilters :)- and love the quilt- great colors to go with it's unique backstory:)!

Chrissybugs

Love that floral fabric!

Cinda

Love the story, the fabrics and the resulting quilt!!!

Thanks, Terryt1955 , Sewnsew , True , Mymble , Chrissybugs , and Cinda . It really was that floral fabric that made the whole thing worthwhile! And it was a great way to use a lot of bright fat quarters I had in my stash, too.
