Description

Several months ago I purchased a quilt kit from Hawthorne Threads for the Starlight Quilt using Lilly Belle fabrics (Bari J. Ackerman) by Art Gallery. I had most of it cut out when I realized that I did not have enough fabric Luckily Art Gallery is a reputable company and the owner of Art Gallery Fabrics sent me more fabric (along with some beautiful solids) for the project. I finally decided over the weekend to start piecing this quilt top.

The pattern is a free project sheet through Art Gallery (the tutorial link below will take you to Art Gallery free projects and you just need to scroll through them to find Starlight). I've found some mistakes in the pattern - but when I checked today, it looks like Art Gallery corrected the problems through their site...I should have printed out the new project sheet before starting!

Today (11/14/2012), I completed piecing the upper half of this quilt. It will finish at 82" X 82". To see the whole view, you need to click on it (for some reason it is only showing a portion of the photo in the slideshow).

01/16/2013 Update: This quilt has been giving me fits! Not only did I get the wrong yardage (which the manufacturer fixed for me after I contacted them), but the project sheet I used when I cut my fabric was wrong (it has now been updated on the Art Gallery site, but I had to piece some pieces I had already cut to fix the issues)...and then after I got the whole top pieced, I noticed I had flip flopped four blocks (another mistake in the pattern) and the mistake was VERY noticeable so I had to rip out seams and re-piece! That said, I have finally managed to complete this top as well as piece the back. I'm going to fold it all up for now because I need to buy some batting that will not be too heavy for this very luxurious fabric! Stay tuned - I hope to get this one completed before the end of March :)

3/1/2013 Update: Oh this is one big hot mess. The quilting is really not my best, but I am plugging along and hoping that once it is washed it will look okay. I am really struggling with my thumb again - I am beginning to think I have some arthritis in that joint and I tend to use my left thumb to push the fabric around when I am free-motion quilting so it is getting a work out. I have about 1/4 left to quilt and then I can square it up and get it bound. I will be SO happy to finish this one!

3/3/2013 Update: FINISHED! Thank goodness! This quilt ended up being 75" X 75". The back is pieced. The label is hand embroidered. And I am ready to move onto something else now!!!!!

True

I love this fabric and it is gorgeous in this pattern...some good sewing time was had from the looks of it! Very pretty:-)

Damascst

Looking good so far.

Caribousmom

Damascst and True thanks so much! I struggled a little because the pattern I was using (and had cut my fabric by) was wrong! So, I'm making adjustments and it will all be good in the end :)

Caribousmom

Carolmarie thanks! I'm liking it even though it is forcing me to tweak the pattern :)

Conniharns

I know what you were doing today!! Looks great Caribousmom! Cathie and I were jealous all day!!

Quilt455

Yes we were. We GOT to win that lottery so we can all stay home and quilt. Wendy, I do not know how you do it with a pattern that is off but this is beautiful. n(more so in person). I just love that large and I do mean large pin wheel block. This fabric seems very different to me then I am used to seeing you use. I love it and can't wait to see it all together.

Quilt455

Oh ya, this is some of the best feeling fabric I have ever got to fondel.

Caribousmom

Conniharns I would have gotten farther along if I weren't rewriting this pattern LOL! If you ever want to cut work and come up and sew, you and Quilt455 are always welcome wink

Caribousmom

Quilt455 I love the big blocks too :)

Quilt455

Thanks Wendy. Always have such a great time sewing with you and Conni.

Caribousmom

Quilt455 Me too :) We need to make another "date!"

Conniharns

I'm game....what can we swipe next time?

Caribousmom

Conniharns I'm putting those little tags like the stores use on my quilts, crock pot, and any projects...then when you try to walk out the door, alarms will sound LOL.

Quilt455

Okay, I am researching how to "Jam" alarms!

Caribousmom

Quilt455 lol

True

Caribousmom LOL about alarms!! I am so impressed you got this far and are having to correct pattern as you go. One of my fears in using other's patterns is this issue. I just purchased a pattern for the first time in a long time and sure hope it is right!

Caribousmom

True This is the first time I've encountered an issue with a poor pattern. When I first bought this kit, I started cutting the fabric and fell WAY short...supposedly they corrected the pattern, and sent me extra fabric. But, the last block was significantly changed in terms of size of pieces (they had me originally cut 10.5" squares, but the "fix" says 10-7/8" squares...and I don't have the fabric to recut these). I'm getting creative because I refuse to buy more fabric! LOL. I have some extra of other fabric, so my block is going to look a little different than the original.I will be very reluctant to purchase another kit by Art Gallery unless it is months after the release...

Quilt455

This is coming out great. I know that it has given you a hard time but it is really pretty and the fabric has such a great feel to it. Can't want to see it finished and in person.

Caribousmom

Quilt455 thank you, dear friend :)

True

I am so glad you have figured out a way to finish this one as I so love how gorgeous it is but it has been a royal pain in the butt! You deserve a stick to it award;-)

Quilt455

I can just picked you all cuddled up in this quilt with a nice, warm cup of coffee.

Mymble

This is so gorgeous- I'm working with the same fabric line and you're right- it has a wonderful silky feel- I too am at batting stage- so please let me know what you pick, as I hadn't even thought about that- was just going to use Cream Rose- my ususal go-to thin batting- is there a better choice?

Caribousmom

Mymble I am thinking of using Tuscany cotton batting - my local store carries it and it is WAY lighter (and less stiff) than warm and white so I think it might work nicely. My other choice would be wool (very light weight but warm)...except I think I want the wrinkles in this :)

Quilt455 ...and a good book :)

True We should have a badge that says: Stuck with it Despite the Headaches! LOL

Mymble

Caribousmom So glad to know about the Tuscany- I will check it out at my LQS- lighter sounds good!!!

Terryt1955

Beautiful rich colors yet still soft! I t sounds like it's a real treat to touch but not so great to work with the pattern. Sorry you're having such a struggle but you will finish it just because of the fabric. I've never heard of Tuscany or Cream Rose so thanks for the lesson. I always get Warm & Natural because it's such a good deal on sale at JoAnn's.

Quilt455

Of course I meant Picture you. And I am sooooooooooooo glad you can find the coffee. hehehehe

Quilt455

Glad to see that you are working on this one since I think it is going to be beautiful when you are do!!! Sorry your thumb is bothering you again. I can't even think of a way you could stablize it while trying to quilt. You would know more about that then me. The fabric is so soft and beautiful, can't wait to see it in person all finished.

Tejesarita

This is so beautiful! You have picked adorable fabrics!

Caribousmom

Tejesarita Thank you!
Quilt455 I have tried to figure out a different way to FMQ to give my thumb a break, but I can't seem to change how I do it :(
Terryt1955 The Tuscany cotton batting is wonderful - it is actually pretty light weight.

Mymble

Beautiful fabrics- sorry this has been so vexing- who would think a pattern could give so many troubles:(((

Caribousmom

Mymble no kidding! Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong with this one - but I DO love the fabric...so my hope it that once it is done and washed and crinkly, I will find some love in my heart for it!

Mymble

LOL- oh yes, all will be forgiven by then:)

Janquilter

Very pretty colors. Sounds like it was an intertesting project.

Caribousmom

Janquilter Yes it was! Thanks!
Carolmarie Thank you!!! :)

True

Wow yes it was a pain and yes you are glad it is over (sure hope your thumb is ok) but boy it is gorgeous done! Love all of it (easy for me to say I know) and as always I offer my address if you happen to really hate it a month from now;-) Truly lovely.

Caribousmom

True LOL - thanks! It has a really lovely "hand" because of those butter soft fabrics (although I think a lot of my pinning and quilting issues were directly related to the softness of the fabrics).

Mymble

Beautiful finish! I hope your thumb is feeling better soon and that you get lot's of relax time out of this beauty!:)))

True

Caribousmom those truly lovely fabrics can really make us work for their finish!

snippet

this is gorgeous! I'm glad you made it to the finish!

Caribousmom

Snippet Thanks so much - I am too :)
True Oh, yes they do!
Mymble thanks - my thumb is still hurting - but now I can focus on piecing for awhile and that doesn't seem to hurt...I was sitting under this quilt tonight watching tv and I must say, I do love these fabrics!

Quilt455

It is beautiful! I hope in a few days (okay may be weeks) that you come to love it. It really is wonderful

Terryt1955

YAY for your finish! It is beautiful and you can almost feel how soft it is by the soft colors. Hope your thumb recovers!!!

Tejesarita

This became so beautiful quilt! The pattern is wonderful even you had enough troubles with it. x Teje

Caribousmom

Tejesarita Thank you so much!
Terryt1955 thanks...I hope my thumb recovers too!
Quilt455 LOL - it is beginning to grow on me now that I don't have to wrestle with it anymore!

Readerowl

Beautiful finish!
