Description

This project is part of a quilt along hosted by Clover and Violet (there is a Flickr group here). These are a couple of the blocks (ultimately it will have 12 blocks which are 15.75" finished).

The fabrics are from Kate Spain's Good Fortune line (by Moda) with coordinating Bella solids and perl cotton threads.

Updated 4/25/2012: I've finished embroidering Block #3 and added it to the photos here.

Photos of all my blocks may be found on my Flickr photostream here.

Update May 19, 2012: I finished embroidery for blocks 4 & 5 (dragonfly and flowers)

Update July 9, 2012: Catching up - I've finished the embroidery for blocks 6 & 7...now I'm only 3 blocks behind LOL

Update July 17, 2012: Finished embroidering blocks 8 and 9. I have only three more blocks to embroider and then I can start determining my layout and add the sashing!

Update August 5, 2012: Finished block 10 (flowers in the basket)

Update September 6, 2012: I have finished embroidering ALL the blocks! Whew! Block 12 on the QAL was to do a label for the quilt (name of QAL and date), but I've already designed a label for the back of the quilt, so instead, I designed my own little block (bee buzzing around flowers). Next thing on this quilt will be to arrange my block layout and decide on sashing or not (I'm leaning toward sashing).

September 23, 2012: FINISHED! I've blogged about this quilt here (and there are more photos there as well). In short...this quilt ended up being 60" X 78". Each block is unique with an embroidered design in the center of each courthouse step block. The back is pieced ... and I tried my hand at some improvisational piecing there too. I designed and hand stitched the label using perl cotton floss. The sashing is Kona white. The quilting is a meandering stipple design.

Carriep

I am doing these same blocks. Great job.

Caribousmom

They're fun, aren't they, Carrie?

Dianncornell

Really cute.

Caribousmom

thanks!

Bonnieb2

So cute, love the designs!

Caribousmom

Thank you , Bonnie! :)

True

Ok without the embroidery these blocks are gorgeous...with it they turn into one of the sweetest, prettiest pieces of art I have seen! I love them...how big will this quilt be when done? I am in love with another of your quilts...

True

Oh I and I went and checked them all out on Flickr!!

Caribousmom

Thank you True :)

Each block will finish at 15.75", so without sashing it would be 47.25" X 63"

I think I am probably going to put sashing in this quilt, but we'll see. And I haven't decided yet about a border. So I am thinking it could end up being as big as 81" X 64" or so.

Janquilter

Pretty, pretty colors!

Caribousmom

Thanks, Jan!

True

I just love this quilt...and the dragon fly is spectacular! Is someone special getting this or are you keeping it? (or do you need my address;-)!!!)

Caribousmom

LOL, Mary! I actually think I'll keep this one...but we'll see. When I first started quilting, I gave away just about every quilt I made and my husband reminded me that it is okay to keep some of them. Good guy! :)

Rebecca

You should definitely keep this one for yourself!

Caribousmom

LOL, Rebecca - thank you for that. Sometimes I need a reminder that it is perfectly fine to keep the things we make!

True

I give away too many...if I had made this one it would not be going anywhere...just amazing!

Terryt1955

How did I miss this one? You are one prolific quilter! And yes you should definitely keep this one. I agree with True how the embroidery just adds a whole new layer of wonderfulness (is there such a word?) to this quilt.

Caribousmom

Thanks, Terry! I'm a little obsessed laughs

Mymble

Love it! The embroidery is wonderful and the fabrics just pop in the design- can't wait to see the next installment- and I agree-this one is a keeper:)

Caribousmom

Mymble thanks so much! I'm two blocks behind (again) on this one...so I'll be catching up and posting more soon :)

True

Looking at your new blocks (and old) just made my not good day better:-) thanks

Caribousmom

You're welcome True Sorry to hear your day is not good persevere

Terryt1955

Light bulb just went on! This is what I had in mind when I signed up for the Handstitched Medallion Class. A little embroidery interspersed with pieced blocks. Love the little surprise tucked into the center of each block. And I agree with True , you take one look at this and it makes you very happy. It also makes me want to quilt again which was just the opposite effect the class was having on me. Thanks for the good cheap therapy! Can hardly wait to see the end result so I can pin it in my quilting library. There's no way I'd ever be able to make all the quilts I've pinned but it's wonderful eye candy!

Caribousmom

Terryt1955 thank you! Such a nice comment. I'm sorry you are not enjoying the medallion class. I like the small size of these little embroidery blocks...I can stitch one up in one evening while watching television. I have only 5 total left to go before I'm done - then I think I'll sash this one and get it pieced :)

Terryt1955

Caribousmom I just spent literally hours over at Clover & Violets blog getting inspired. Thanks so much for telling about their link. Their Embroidery 101 is wonderful!

HAve you ever read the children's book If You Give a Mouse A Cookie? Well that's how I am bouncing from one blog to the next. I must admit though., some times it's hard to disconnect and actually get something done.

Caribousmom

LOL Terryt1955 blog hopping is VERY addictive. Glad you had fun over there - they run a fabulous blog :)

Janquilter

These are coming along so nicely. The embroidery is wonderful!

Caribousmom

Thank you Carolmarie and Janquilter I'll be updating this again in the next couple of days as I am just about done with three more blocks! I'm getting anxious to get them all done so I can sash them and see the whole thing all together!

True

Well I am trying to patiently wait (my toe is tapping...) but it is hot and humid and it makes me quite inpatient I must say;-). It will be exciting and fun to see the rest of your work and then it all done!!!!

Caribousmom

Carolmarie and True - thank you and I've added two more finished blocks (block 8 is the birdhouse, block 9 is the little flags). I have three more blocks to embroider and I can start playing with layout...which is when I may ask for all of your help!

True

I think that bird house may be my new favorite...both are wonderful. And thank you for not making me wait too long;-)

Caribousmom

LOL - you're welcome True (I love that little birdhouse too :))

Quilt455

I just do not understand how you can be so multi talented. You must be getting tired of hearing me say, I LOVE IT. You have such a eye for color, I am hoping some of it rubs off on me soon. GREAT JOB!

Quilt455

Oh ya, how many projects to you have going at once?

Caribousmom

Thanks Quilt455 (Cathie)! You're making me blush! Oh my, how many projects? Hmmmmm, at least 10, maybe more. I've sort of lost track LOL

Terryt1955

Hurry up and finish it so I can pin it. I have so many of yurs that I love that I should just create a separate board for Wendy !

True

OMH I need one of those Wendy boards what a great idea!! Truly Wendy your eye for color is simply amazing...

True

OK here we go again with my typing I need a edit button on comments...OMH=OMG honest it does;-)

Caribousmom

Terryt1955 awwwwww, thanks! True thank you, really...far too kind! LOL re: OMH... does this mean oh my hair (is sticking up) or oh my heavens or oh my hem (is not straight)...LOL

JudyBR

Beautiful colors.

JudyBR

Love the topiary embroidery.

Caribousmom

Thanks Jbr ! I have three blocks to finish and then I can start putting this quilt together YAY!

True

Caribousmom one more gorgeous block done! How do you get the design you are stitching onto fabric?

Caribousmom

Thanks, True . Clover and Violet provide a link to the design for each block which I download as a pdf. Then I carefully cut out the square with the design and center it behind my block. I lay the whole thing on top of a jerry-rigged light box (essentially a plastic box with a flashlight inside and turned on), and I then trace the design using a water soluble marker. Once the design is traced onto the fabric, I start stitching...deciding on how to fill things in as I go.

True

Ok another question any tricks to how keep fabric taunt while do the tracing? And a favorite water soluble marker? As it clearly works as you can see no lines at all!

Caribousmom

This is the pen I use True : http://www.nancysnotions.com/product/fine+line+erasable+marking+pen+set.do

I like the fineness of it (which is why you can't see the lines...I haven't washed my blocks yet, but when I do, all the color in the lines will be gone entirely).

As far as keeping the fabric taut - I used a lightweight fusable interfacing and fused it to my fabric before piecing my blocks (just on the fabric that I was going to embroider on)...it gives the fabric a little weight and makes it easy to write on without wrinkling. I have taken to doing this for my labels as well...

True

Your are so smart...and you even figured where I was going...I want to figure it out for my labels! Never thought of the interacting thank you Caribousmom !

Caribousmom

You are quite welcome True , my friend :)

Kathie

I have just been roaming for hours looking at this sew along and then moving onto other bloggers. I've been to Clover and Viotet's blog before and it has great ideas smile ! Thanks for the reminder!

Kathie

P.S. Your blocks are beautiful!

Caribousmom

Thanks so much +Kmwilson28 - I love their site and this has been such a fun QAL!

Terryt1955

Ingenious putting the light weight interfacing behind the block to be embroidered! 2 more blocks to go before we see the next exciting phase. What color are you going to do the sashing in?

Caribousmom

Terryt1955 I can't take credit for the interfacing - that was a recommendation by the QAL host (and she was SO right!!!). I am leaning toward white for sashing...but we'll see!

Terryt1955

I can see white as the sashing, definitely, so it will showcase these adorable blocks. True will be so happy too!

True

Oh love that buzzing bee...it must be exciting to get this far!!

Caribousmom

It is exciting, True ! I feel like I've been embroidering these blocks forever LOL! I hope that this weekend I can get the layout done and start piecing the rows...then I have to piece the back (But I'm keeping that really simple this time - I think LOL). This is not a huge quilt, so I really would like to get it all completed by the end of the month...

Terryt1955

If you don't chose white for the sashing I will fall over! I can hardly wait to pin this!

Caribousmom

well, I certainly do NOT want you to fall over Terryt1955 so I guess I have no choice but to use white LOL smirk

Mymble

absolutely marvelous- you really are an inspiration!

Caribousmom

thanks, Mymble :)

April

These are so lovely!

Caribousmom

Thanks April !

Sixmunchkinstitching

I had every intention to do this QAL and all my materials are waiting for me in bins. Sigh

True

This is a spectacular piece of art...truly amazing, wonderful, beautiful and breath taking...I just love all of it. And your label and back!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats on a wonderful finish:-)

Caribousmom

Sixmunchkinstitching Hope you get a chance to do this one at some point - a very satisfying quilt to make!

Caribousmom

True Thank you SO much! I am really happy to get this one done and I'm so pleased with it :)

Sewzalot

So pretty. I just love all the little embroidered images. Couldn't stop clicking through all of the beautiful close-up shots of your blocks! Beautiful embroidery work!!

Caribousmom

Sewzalot Thank you so much!

Firetones

I love this quilt. Your fabric taste is impeccable!!!!! clap

Caribousmom

Firetones Thanks!

Sixmunchkinstitching

@caribousmom, I certainly hope to get to it. It's something I want to make for myself since it's made with my favorite colors! Maybe after some other commitments are finished. :)

Conniharns

Oh Caribousmom...ya outdid yourself on this one. Each of your quilts is more beautiful than the one before. Love the colors and contrast in the design....not to mention the embroidery!

Katisquilting

Your quilt came out gorgeous! I didn't have the patience to read the comments before me because some of them were a little too long :) I pinned the QAL on my Pinterest board so I will be able to do it in the near future. Just got some very awesome color embroidery cottons at Jo-Ann last week and this way I have a selection of colors to get started :) Thanks for sharing such a pretty work!

Caribousmom

Sixmunchkinstitching I think this works as a block of the month kind of a project - then it feels less overwhelming with all the hand stitching. Good luck!!

Caribousmom

Conniharns Thank you, my friend! When I get back from NH I'll bring it into work :)

Caribousmom

Katisquilting LOL re: the comments!! I can't wait to see your quilt - I hope you'll post "in progress" photos once you get started!

Kathie

This is just beautiful! I have all the fabric and supplies ready to go, just waiting for after the holidays smile .

Caribousmom

Kathie Thank you! I can't wait to see your quilt...I think this would be a perfect project for the cold winter months :)

Katisquilting

Caribousmom I sure will!

Quilt455

Wow, you continue to impress me. This is beautiful. You hand work is as beautiful as the quilt itself. Glad you got it finished before leaving. Thinking of you my friend

Caribousmom

Quilt455 I really wanted to get one last "finish" in before leaving, Cathie - I was determined! Thank you for the good thoughts. Kip and I got here and went to bed - slept 4 hours and are now up...but we'll be in bed early tonight!!

Goldwillow

Oh my. I love the embroidery! And now I suddenly feel like my stash is lacking this fabric! I'm diggin the color scheme.

Caribousmom

Goldwillow LOL! thanks!
