Description

Whilst updating the project page for Mum's Christmas Present 2012, I was reminded on Mum's Christmas present 2011. In May 2011 I attended a class led by Jennie Rayment, who apart from being totally and utterly bonkers, is a fantastic teacher and designer of blocks that involve bias edges and rolling - the same technique used in cathedral window blocks.

We made three blocks on one day of the class and a separate mini quilt (as yet unfinished) on the second day. I made the blocks to learn a technique and had nothing specific in mind for them. When Mum saw them she fell in love with them. She spent our summer holidays looking for a big bag with no success, so this project was born.

I used duck cloth - a heavy weight cotton - for the body of the bag, and quilted-as-I-went.

I nearly had a disaster with the handles. I had bought metal "eyelets" and cut a hole in the bag. Then went to the attach the "metal" eyelet (which turned out to be plastic) and it snapped. A mad dash to the centre of Newcastle to John Lewis three days before Christmas and disaster was averted!

I have the book that these blocks are from "Foldy Rolly Patchwork Pzazz" and would love to make more of them - Jennie is known as the Calico Queen, and has made these blocks in plain calico (muslin) which is stunning - with no colours to distract you, you really see the textures created by folding and rolling the fabric.

Scientificquilter Sewnsew True Thank you - my mum agreed!

Beautiful! I, too, have been disappointed by those plastic grommets but haven't had one break yet. Cool info on those blocks!

Great bag, I would love to take a class with Jenny, I bet it is great fun. I believe that she calls herself the 'Muslin Mistress' in the States.

Jenniesthreads

Posyp thank you - you're right - muslin mistress in the US - she is totally mad - we had a fantastic time!

twistedandloose

You made that for me - right?? It is beautiful.

Love the bag, I did a workshop with Jenny and was hooked. I made the blocks from the same book but in calico (muslin if you are from US) and one Christmas fabric and loads of embelishments, so sad it came down today and won't go up again for a year. - well it might!

I have now organised one near me next February
