Description

My daughter is a teacher in Japan, teaching four year olds in pre-school.  This year she asked her father and I to play Santa Claus for her students.  She was going to have them write letters to Santa and mail them to us and we were going to write the children back.  Once the three other classes heard about her plans, they wanted to do the same but would only send one big class letter to Santa.  We received the letters and my husband wrote them back.  I found a fantastic printable Santa letterhead and envelope on this blog:  http://geekinglasses.typepad.com/a-geek-in-glasses/2012/11/free-printable-santa-letter-envelope.html

We got all the letters typed up and addressed the envelopes to the children and classes and added a surprise christmas ornament for each class tree and an extra one for the school's main tree.  Officially the ornaments are from Mrs. Claus special to the classes and school for all the wonderful letters they wrote to Santa.  For the school tree I did the original size and for the class ornaments I shrunk the pattern down (73% of the original size instead of 100%) and they turned out great.  I omitted the tassel on the bottom and instead I stitched the class name.  Next year I'm going to make more of these as a gift to my daughter for her own tree.

Tip:
The pattern comes with the designs/patten printed onto a single sheet of 8 1/2 X 11 Sticky Fabri-Solvy.  Once you use it, the pattern is literally gone.   To keep the pattern for future use: Before you use it photocopy the page of Fabri-Solvy making sure you get a good crisp clear copy ( I actually made several copies).  I also shrunk the size down for the smaller ornaments.  You can purchase a pack of 12 sheets of Sticky Fabri-Solvy at your local craft or quilt store and using the photocopy, make additional copies to use.  This is what I did for the smaller ornaments and it works fantastic.  I now have the ability to re-use this pattern over and over again.

The ornaments are made with felted wool and crazy stitched with a mix of DMC 8wt and Valdani 12wt threads.

Today we received a beautiful thank you letter and a box of cookies from the school's owner and a CD of all the kids opening their letters and the ornaments. They sang a song for "Santa and Mrs. Claus" as well and it was too cute. I'm already planning for next year!

Wow! These are wonderful gifts for the classes! Not sure I have the patience to make them, but they are beautiful!

You'd be surprised how quickly and easily they stitched up.
