Description

A couple I have been friends with since high school are welcoming another grandchild in April and the first grandson.  It is also their daughter's first baby.  She had messaged me asking for help on how to do something with Sarah Jane's Out to Sea fabric but is not much of a seamstress.  So I asked if she would like me to make a baby quilt and she was thrilled.  So this is it...just started and think I know kind of where I am going;-)  I included the pin from Pinterest under tutorial that I am using as inspiration.  Still have to decide on a name for it.

Update 12-29-12  All nine patches are done and cut and arrangement is on design wall to live with in case need to move blocks.  Also (think) have decided to use 1" sashing between the four blocks that come together with dark blue smaller squares and then 2 inch sashing in other spots and as border.  Will add small cornerstones of wheel print and larger ones of dark blue pirate.  Will fussy cut these.  And ordered backing (dark blue pirates they are just too cute not to use) and binding (blue stripe).

Update 2-9-13 Basted and started quilting today.  First time done something larger than table runner on my new machine and I think I am in LOVE!!  I have enjoyed sewing on it but this is first time I was like "and this is why I spent all that money!!"  Quilted with wavy lines that mimic a few things about the quilt in my mind...water/waves, the map for the treasure hunt on fabric on back and the course a pirate ship would take as it sails...

2-10-13 Done and in box ready to be shipped.  Named it "Frolic on the High Seas" because frolic is another word for joyful, happy...and high seas is representing life and the world...so wishing him continued joy and happiness as he enters this world. Also fabric has Sea in its name:-)

I used a different batting for first time Quilters Dream Natural Cotton Batting Select Loft and really liked it but more costly than Warm and Natural.  But would use again especially for baby quilt as comes in a 60 x 60 size and was lovely to work with... also used Mettler White 100% Cotton Silk Finish Thread for first time to do quilting and loved it!  Think may be hooked :-)  Should have done a thin white border so binding did not cut into corner stones but thought of it way too late...oh well live and learn.

Rebeccajeffsmith

Cute nautical theme. Can't wait to see it finished!

Sewnsew

It is looking great. The fabrics are cuter than cute!

Momver

Very cute. What will go on the back, and how will you quilt it? Is a disappearing nine patch made by making a nine patch block, cutting it in fourths, and rotating the sections?

True

Thank you Rebeccajeffsmith Sewnsew and Momver this fabric is so cute and so soft! I am not sure about back yet...I was going to order some of the blue map fabric but love the navy little boy pirates so may go with that...need to make up my mind and order it! and I will use some sort of straight line quilting as that is what I do best. Not sure I can FMQ something this size with success. And yes a disappearing nine patch is made by cutting in fourths...I also then mix up the "new blocks" to reassemble I know people do it differently. The tutorial button shows what I think I will do for this one as it adds sashing which I have never done before. This is a quilt I made using the method I have done for two quilts before As the Bee Flies

Sewnsew

It'll look fabulous like that one, True!

Terryt1955

I love this line of fabric. It is so perfect for a baby boy! Since he's going to be doted on why not call it "Life's a Breeze".

True

Terryt1955 Love that name...that may be it thanks!

AllPatchedUp

This is absolutely adorable True ! :)

Laweigel

This is soooo cute-just love it True !

Laweigel

I just saw the picture of your dogs in the snow! They are beautiful! They would like to come in for popcorn and cocoa coffee

True

Allpatchedup and Laweigel thank you...I am liking it more and more as I go! The dogs were most unhappy I was standing there taking their picture instead of letting them in... now they were not out long but they said it was too long!

Terryt1955

This is looking oh so cute. LOVE the cornerstone and sashing idea, especially the fussy cutting of the cornerstones. I'm sure we are going to see this top completed in no time! I wish I had your speed!

Readerowl

These fabrics work so well with this pattern. Love it. I've pinned various disappearing nine patches but never tried one. Looking forward to seeing it progress.

Conniharns

Hey Terryt1955.... True has speed now because of her new "rippy zippy" Turbo powered machine!!! That's the first thing I thought of when I saw this beautiful top done already!,

True

LOL Terryt1955 and Conniharns I am far from having this top done so not sure about that speed thing!! Sewing on sashing and cornerstones could take me a while even with rippy zippy help;-) Readerowl than you...I have to say I have loved the disappearing nine patches I have done - great pattern for a collection. I have never added sashing before to this pattern so this will be a first.

Tinastitches

So cute! A perfect little boy quilt.

twistedandloose

Great pattern and the colors are awesome - love the orange.

True

Tinastitches thank you the fabric really is just perfect for a boy...got some of thinner sashing on today but still a ways to go!

True

Seshlaman Thank you! The orange is really red in real life:-). Just the bad lighting or my poor photography skills;-)

Chrissybugs

Wow, this quilt really caught my eye! It's wonderful!!

True

Chrissybugs thank you...I am really pleased with it at this point...and so is my friend. So fingers crossed when it comes time to quilt!

AllPatchedUp

OH MY GOODNESS!! I don't know how I missed those fabulous little ship's wheel cornerstones the first time around but those are too freakin' adorable!!!! They just make me smile and are sure to melt the hearts of the grandparents and mom-to-be....and everyone else. ;)
Good to see you're enjoying your new machine! :)

True

Allpatchedup thank you...just finished quilting it and now just need a label (waiting on grandma for name) and binding....

Terryt1955

How exciting that you've already finished the quilting! DId you drop the feed dogs to be able to do that little loopy thing or were you able to do it with your regular quilting foot? So cute! Are you going to keep up the steam and work on the binding tonight? How are you doing with all that snow being dumped on the east coast?

True

Terryt1955 That loop is on fabric I did not do it...it is map for treasure;-). I was thinking if I could FMQ I could imitate it but since I don't... And no I do not stay up and quilt or actually anything. If I do not get sleep I am no good to anyone AND I tend to get sick. So hopefully will get to it tomorrow. We are a little buried, 36 inches worth! But otherwise ok:-)

AllPatchedUp

Yay for you!! Good luck on finishing it up. Definitely get some rest True , you need to stay healthy now!!! Quilter's orders. :P

Sorry to hear about your snow....much of it missed us thankfully, we only got about a foot or so (I think...looks like a foot to me but then I'll hear it was like 20 inches or somesuch thing :D ha!)

True

Allpatchedup A foot is a lot!!!

AllPatchedUp

True It is, but I've lived here all my life and we usually have more by now, so it doesn't seem to phase me as much I suppose. These mild winters we've had the last few years were nice (we had 80's last February...I'd take some of those days right about now!!!!), but I knew they wouldn't last! smirk

Quilt455

True, I love this quilt. Red, blue and yellow are my colors for my living space and I just totally love the combination. This is a great pattern for a baby quilt. Glad you are enjoying your new machine.

True

Allpatchedup I know what you mean by a foot seeming like nothing! I must say I have always lived in north and I miss when we have no snow plus it worries me. But I did not know what we got yesterday was truly possible!

True

Quilt455 Thank you and this fabric is so soft and lovely!

AllPatchedUp

Oh I hear ya True . It's like if we don't have any/much snow, we're all on edge just waiting for the 'big one' (that we all know is coming) to hit!! LOL smiley

AllPatchedUp

And I love the new name!

Amanda

I love how this turned out!

True
Stamdl

This is SO cute! Love everything about it and I can totally relate to your elation as you quilt on your new machine. Isn't it amazing what a difference it makes? I'm over the moon with mine too...

Silsbee

Oh my gosh, I WANT ONE! :D

Laweigel

Adorable!!!

True

Laweigel Silsbee Stamdl Carolmarie Thank you all! Hoping it will be just what they want. Carolmarie my wavy lines were done with walking foot and remember really curly ones on back are the fabric not stitching!

True

Stamdl I did not get a machine could make that much of a difference! So blown away by it.

Sewnsew

True, you have done a marvellous job!

Jodyrose

True, GREAT job!!! Love the colors and the design, the baby will be entranced I am sure!

True

Jodyrose Sewnsew thank you both...I of course wish I could "fix" some things but they will never notice so I shall move on!

Mymble

Really wonderful-love everything you did with it! I have the pink bundle and have been trying to figure out a plan- great inspiration!!

Sandyquiltz

This is really cute. Love the fussy cut cornerstones!

True

Mymble the fabric is so wonderful to work with and feel! and Sandyquiltz thank you...

Sewnsew

True We can be our own worse enemies sometimes can't we? I remind myself that if it was perfect it would have been made on a machine. It works....sometimes! lol

True

Sewnsew Good point! Thanks!!

Caribousmom

What an adorable quilt! I love the binding ... and, well, just everything!

True

Caribousmom Thank you so much! It is now in the grandmother's hands and will be given to mom to be this weekend!

Speattle

True
This is "True-ly" beautiful. ☺

True

LOL Speattle thank you!

AllPatchedUp

How adorable is it in that nursery!?! :)

stitchcat

This really is the lovely quilt - I'm sure Sawyer is enjoying it immensely. Great colours that will be able to grow with him as he gets older...

True

stitchcat Thank you....Sawyer is due at any moment!

stitchcat

True Oh my! Well we'll need an update pic with him and the quilt together... good luck to all!

sareew

I love the quilt you made! I really like the yellow in there, but hubby didn't want yellow in ours. You have so many cute details - all the fussy cut squares. I think you chose the perfect quilting, too!

True

sareew thank you so much...it has been well received by new owner and it was so soft I wanted it for me;-)
