Description

I'm joining in the Lucky Stars BOM Put together by Elizabeth Dackson of Don't Call Me Betsy.

I think I might break into my Kate Spain Terrain fabrics for this so I made up a 6" test block to try some out.  I think I may try doing another with essex linen in the "neutral" areas around each star since that was what I really wanted to use with the Terrain fabrics.  Haven't decided on the 6" or 12" blocks yet - she is including piecing for both sizes so I may do some in both sizes.

Love this block in Terrain!!!

Quilt455

This is beautiful. Totally scary to me.

Rebecca

Thanks True ! I'm pretty excited about it too. I think Terrain will be fun collection for these blocks.

Rebecca

Quilt455 You could totally do this! This was actually my first paper pieced block. It really is not scary once you get started. Elizabeth's directions in the block of the month are great - plus there's the tutorial from Faith at Fresh Lemons, and tomorrow I'm going to link a helpful video or two over in the Pretty in Patchwork: Holidays group.

Quilt455

Wow, you are brave if this is your first paper pieced block. I will be looking at the videos when you post them. Thanks for aways being so helpful to the rest of us.

Rebecca I agree paper piecing is much easier than it looks Quilt455 and start with something that does not have all the points meeting in the middle and you will have no problems. So Rebecca did you leave paper on to join the middle or take them off? I have to push myself to work on point all meeting like this...scares me!

Jenniffier

Wow that looks amazing! You are making me want to join along too.. However, too many projects right now to think about starting any other.

Beautiful - and I agree - the tutorials are so clear, so even if you haven't done it before, jump right in and create gorgeous blocks like yours, Rebecca!

Rebecca

Quilt455 Not that brave. I figured the only thing I had to lose was some time, a bit of paper and fabric. :-)

Rebecca

True I took off the paper on this one. When I try one with essex I may leave it on since it tends to shift around more in my experience. One of my corners doesn't quite match up here but the center fabrics hide it pretty well. Also, I went with my gut here and did not press all the seams open as suggested. I actually tend to have better seam matching on a lot of blocks with pressing to the side and not pinning because the alternate seam allowances will nest together and match up as they go through the machine.

Looks great! I joined this BOM too but so far have only made a pretty pile of fabrics to use--haven't tried actually making a block yet. Need to get on it before I end up way behind! :)

Rebecca

Aprilc Yeah, I haven't had a chance to get back to this either. I really want to try a block with some Essex linen before I commit to that with the entire quilt. I don't want to get too far behind myself - Maybe I should make a group so we can encourage each other to stay on track. I think there are several people here at Threadbias doing this BOM.

Rebecca sounds good! I wonder how the Essex would behave in one of these blocks? It would surely be gorgeous, but I do wonder if it would misbehave in the pile of seams? I adore using Essex line but usually starch it into submission. I'm new to paper piecing, so I don't know:). Let us know how your practice block goes!

Rebecca

Aprilc I'm new to paper piecing as well, so asked Elizabeth about using Essex and she said it's a little more fussy but can be done and give a great result. Since my intent had always been to combine Essex with this fabric I thought I would give it a try with at least one block and see if I'm up for using it on the whole quilt.

Sewexcitedquilts

I love your white background and how it makes the star pop.

Rebecca

Sewexcitedquilts Thank you! I think I'm going to try using a combination of natural and white Essex linen for my blocks. I just haven't had a chance to sit down and give it a try yet.

Rebecca I am in if you start a group on this BOM project! Despite the fact that I did make the practice block, I still need to do Jan. and now Feb. is also upon us!!! If we had a group we could most certainly encourage one another. Let me know if you do!

Sewnsew

That is a fabulous looking block. The fabrics are gorgeous! Great job!
