Description

Making this for a friend who is due next month.

She didn't want to find out the sex of the baby, so went with gender neutral greens and yellows, with a touch of brown.  Not my usual color palette, but using mostly Lizzy House fabrics made it worthwhile, haha!

Top pieced quite quickly, i started yesterday and finished today!

I used the Kaleidoscope pattern by Cluck Cluck Sew.  It was a fun pattern, i would use it again.  I did alter the pattern slightly, the crib size quilt in the pattern is supposed to be 4x5 blocks across and i went with 4x4 instead, making it finish about 43" square.  I plan to use a few extra blocks in a pieced backing.

I normally do 36X40 for baby quilts, this size threw me off in terms of how i plan to back it.  I am still searching through my stash for something that wants to make the backing.  I spent WAY to much on xmas sale fabric, so i need to use stash and not go buy something extra for the back.

Has anyone combined flannel and regular quilt cotton with success?  i have a brown dotted flannel that will match nicely, but only have 30".  Can i piece that with cotton if i prewash the flannel first? Thanks for any advice...

Update:  Completed 1-16-13:  found Kona Tarragon to match the greens fairly well and did a strip of 3 leftover blocks and a cute hedgehog that i cut with my Silhouette appliqued on the back. The hedgehog was a must, as the Lizzy House hedgehog fabric was my favorite in the quilt:)  Quilted in a fmq meandering stitch.  Washed and wrinkled:)  Measures 41x41

I think the fleece will be perfect for the backing of a baby quilt. That would be so soft and cuddly. I'm in awe of how well you matched the seams- very impressive!

You have one very lucky friend to be receiving such a fantastic gift. Nice job.

Aprilc

thank you all for your lovely comments. after debating a couple days on backings, i am weak and placed an online order for some some yardage for a backing. so much for my resolve to use stash, hahah!
while waiting, time to start another project, right!?

I like this pattern, and your color choices for a "Neutral" baby.

Aprilc I have used fannel back with a cotton pieced front for quilts for the grandbabies and they come out great. Nice and cuddly for the little ones. I have also done it for my oldest daughter and it is her favorite quilt.

Quilt455

Oh yeah, I totally love this

Aprilc

Quilt455 thanks! I chickened out on the flannel, but i am going to try it soon for something else! i'm sure it must make dreamy soft quilts:)

Real cute and love the hedgehog!

True

Love the hedgehog and what a great finish!

Rebecca

I've used flannel on the back of quilts before - just wash and dry several times with hot water/ hot dryer to pre-shrink. I really like this pattern and the hedgehog is too cute!
