Description

I promised to make my son a flannel quilt since it gets mighty cold here and if you do not keep woodstove going (and your mother tells you not to use heat any more than necessary as that is why we have a woodstove;-) like you should it is even colder.  Luckily I was smart enough to just buy a layer cake and go with sewing it together as this quilt almost caused me a nervous break down.  It was a pain to sew and matching the seams... I either got it dead on first time (luckily this was case most of the time) or could not get them to line up no matter how hard I tried...so I stop trying and decided I liked it the way it was coming out!  Hey I can go with the flow.  I sewed top last night as once I was started was afraid if I stopped I would never go back.  The thought of machine quilting it lasted all of 15 seconds...I will hand tie it but need to get a better, bigger needle than any I have...and hope it does not take forever and break my fingers along the way.  The good news is I washed the backing so it would shrink as needed and it is sooooo soft...so once I get the darn thing done it will be one cuddly, warm quilt.  I will not tell you what I said I was going to call it at about 7:30 last night!  The name is because if it had not been for the person I love most in this world I would have shoved it unfinished in the back of the closet!;-)

Update 1-19-13 Done and in washer as I type.  It will be in use before temperatures drop back to single digits tomorrow!  Ended up doing the self binding quilt method as decided one less seam to come unsewn over time as I think this quilt will be taking a beating.  My new machine showed me what it was made of as it dealt with the thick corners with out even blinking:-)

I love the story behind this quilt.

This is pretty...and love the fabrics! What we won't do for those we love! I am sure he will feel the love every time he is cuddled under it and find that easier than adding wood to the wood stove...until someone else gets cold...maybe you need to make one of these for yourself!

AllPatchedUp

That is such a sweet name!! And I love that it's flannel...I want one!! lol Sorry to hear you've had so much trouble with it, but glad that it's being made for your son as it will be a very very wonderful gift for him and will indeed keep him warm. Sending quilty prayers your way True for a nice and easy finish!! ;)

I had to laugh about the part that if you didn't keep on sewing it last night you knew it would end up in a heap in the closet. I'm sure your son is glad you stuck it out because it's going to be a winner! Is the layer cake made up of flannels as well? It's so hard to find good flannels in my neck of the woods.
You're a good mom!

Justine

i love it! have wanted to make one for myself but always end up sewing for my kids instead! love the fabrics soo manly! great choice and great job! i am sure he will love it for years to come! and i think tying it will give it a more manly feel too!! yeah!

True

Thank you all! I do love fabric...and forgot to add it to stash so just did that...and yes Terryt1955 the layer cake was flannel I got it online. And Jschlender it is way easier to keep woodstove going than to make another LOL! And I will take the easy finish prayers for SURE Allpatchedup !! thanks for sending them. The back will be the dark blue with the trees.

Rebeccajeffsmith

Ha ha, True , that's the easy part. Wish I lived next door, I would help you tie it off!

True

Rebeccajeffsmith wish you did too!!

Excited to see the self binding and the "ties". Congrats on the finish and it sounds like just in time for your son to snuggle up in to ward off the cold. Will he end up dragging it all over the house or will it stay on his bed?

True

Terryt1955 As soon as he is awake to hold quilt will add picture...it is for his tv viewing and Xbox playing...so will be in living room. He does have one for his bed I made years ago...not as warm as this one though! When I went to bed he had it in use;-). And when I got up it looked like maybe Bella borrowed it all night!

Terryt1955 Pictures are up...I showed binding from front and back.

Love the new pictures! I'm going tohave to try that self binding trick, it looks slick. I can see it on a baby quilt that is getting washed everyother day.
Your poor dogs look so dejected. I think they have practiced that pose, they are just too good for it to be a first time snap.

True

Terryt1955 LOL they cannot believe they were not what I wanted a picture of...and I agree the binding would be good for a baby quilt. I do not like it as well as a regular one for most quilts but thinking about how a quilt will be used and making it to last just makes sense!

True

Carolmarie Lol I do not deserve how much my dogs love me:-). I have to say I love he now has this quilt as he was using MY quilt f Elephant in the Room and I was obsessed with how it was not being properly loved;-) (used a lot but not loved)! So now he has this one I have washed and moved MY quilt to where I hang out and it will be used and cared for as it should be and he can leave this one bunched on the couch or floor for all I care;-). Feels much better and yes you need to make yourself a quilt!
