Description

January: I just finished January's block for Lori ( +Laweigel ). It is a Granny Square quilt block in shades of orange and aqua. I used Moda's Mod Century, Oh My! and others. For the center I fussy cut one of my favorite owls from Timeless Treasures.

February: I finished February's block for Rosemary ( +Posyp ) early (Jan. 19th) as I'm procrastinating finishing another project ! Photos once it reaches it's new home in England.

March: Christine (+Chrissybugs) had us try a Converging Corners Block this month using a tutorial by Film in the Fridge. Fish fabric designed by Diane Springer. It was a fun block that will make a great quilt!

April: April's block is for Mary (+True) and I'm so excited because she just opened it! I used this tutorial, Cathedrals Star Block, from Elizabeth at Don't Call me Betsy! Jason Yenter has a gorgeous line called Camelot that I used. This was my first try at Cathedral Windows and I loved the challenge !

May: I'm venturing into a type of block I've never tried before . . . paper piecing and I love it! This Month's block is for Margaret (+Mymble). She has asked us to pick a country for The Grand Tour quilt and design our own block based on the city. I chose Venice, Italy. I loved the blues of the canals and the reflection of the sunset on the buildings. I used Folkloric Blooms by Sue Spargo and Wendy Morris for Robert Kaufman. I picked a design that would mimic the canals in Venice as well show the sunset reflection on the edges of the canals. Ok, now this one is my very favorite and between figuring out what I wanted to do, then fabrics, has taken me the longest to finish! I found the pattern in the new Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks (Nancy Mahoney's #620). I also used Play Craft's Palette Builder to draw out the colors from the photo. Fun stuff!

June: We had fun making four small blocks for Queen Leo (+Strandkorbtraum) this month. We used a tutorial for the Thrifty Block with specifications of using orange, red and purple. It took me a bit of time to find these colors in my stash (I used Terrain and solids) that would play together well. As soon as Leo gets them I'll post pictures.

July: +Chandra chose an interesting Filmstrip block for July. We used the Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild's tutorial. I loved looking for interesting fabrics I could fussy cut and came across a Red Rooster line by Whimsical. I love Red Rooster collections and Heartstrings by Terri Degenkolb is one I've been wanting to have so . . . I was fabric shopping on my Northern California trip! I decided to use a cream on cream background that complimented the squares and flowers in the block.

August: Cynthia (+Sewqueen) chose the Wild Goose Chase block for us to piece together this month using this tutorial. I had a lot of scraps from Simply Color by V & Co. left over from a quilt I just finished so I used the green ombre in order to get the variated coloring. Sorry the picture looks like lime to yellow, it's actually an olive color to light olive. I loved the preciseness of the paper piecing and this is definitely a block I want to use for a quilt just for me!

September: Yay, it's my month to be queen! ^queen-of-september-bee-biased

October: Rebecca (+rebeccajeffsmith) had mercy on us as the holidays are closing in and had us do a fun 9-block pattern. She chose fabrics in reds, blues and off-white for the blocks to match another bee blocks in which she was queen. I finished and mailed this fun block just in the nick of time . . . :jack_o_lantern:

November: Jody (+Jodyrose) chose a fun and quick block that looks much more complicated than it is. We made the "Frugal Patch Block" using this tutorial. I had some "Lovely" by Benartex left over from another project that I thought may work.

December: Marsh (+QuilterinMotion) made us a tutorial for her Flower in Motion block that was fun to create. I used V & Co's Simply Color for the petals and Botanics for the center. I love the colors in this one!

I was just throwing a tantrum on Lori's thread that I want pictures...and here it is!!! Love it that owl is awesome.

Kathie

True Thank you, it was fun. I seem to have trouble with Threadbias when I upload or go to Update Pictures and Materials. It gets VERY slow and on this one told me there was an application error!

True

Kathie I have had more trouble lately not sure why...will have to pay attention to what it does next time so can tell Alex

AllPatchedUp

Love the block you made Kathie . Great color combo and LOVE that little owl...looks like he's peeking out to say hello and see how things are going. lol :)

Kathie

Allpatchedup Thank you! I made an apron for my daughter with that fabric, she loves owls. I love the colors in Moda's Mod Century but didn't know what to do with it so this was perfect!

Jennifleur

So cool! I love it!

twistedandloose

I love the colors against the white.

Alex

True Kathie I just went to the edit pics/materials page for this project and it was very slow. I have an idea on what the problem is and will have to do some testing but I think I need to change how I make your stash available to you on this page. Some of you are getting such large stashes that I think it's getting bogged down the way I'm currently doing it.

True

Alex thank you for checking!

Alex

Kathie / True Yup, that was the problem and the fix is up! The page should load pretty snappy for you now. Now, when you go to add fabrics, as you expand the tree, it will load on demand your stash items. Pro Tip: If you have the fabric you want in a smaller basket, just expand that basket instead of your whole stash as it will load quicker!

True

Alex OMG much improved!! Thanks:-)

Kathie

Alex Thanks so much! Boy we're really going to bog you down when you get more okays to show more designers smile ! Thank you!

Quilt455

Kathie, this is so cute. Love how you fuzzy cut the owl. She is going to love it.

Kathie

Quilt455 Thank you! I thought that little owl was pretty cute!

Caribousmom

This is a fantastic block! Love orange and turquoise together!!!

Chandra

That owl is adorable. This will be a colorful quilt!

True

Wow I love the butterfly block it is wonderful!

Kathie

True Thank you :-), though when I saw your beautiful butterfly I wondered if mine was too simplistic grin ! I added the antennas with embroidery to spruce it up a bit.

True

Kathie well I just love it and could see a whole quilt of this block... and I love antennas (that was my favorite part of mine as well!)

Kittypearl

Luv taht butterfly! great colors too :)

True

Ok those fish are too wonderful for words!!! Love your block:-)

Kathie

True thank you! They were the only yellow and red I had so I started with these wonderful fish and then went shopping for more smile !

Mymble

Wow- great fish- just brilliant!

Quilterinmotion

Kathie . Ditto to what everyone else said! The blocks are great. I've been using blues and oranges a lot lately. A year ago I NEVER used orange!

Kathie

Quilterinmotion & Mymble , Thank you both! I've just chosen my block for True and I can't wait to start! Actually I need to start because I've changed my mind four times now . . .

True

Kathie LOL you sound like me!

True

Oh and I am soooo excited:-)

Laweigel

Kathie , Oh, your cathedral block is just beautiful...perfect for True !

Terryt1955

This cathedral star block is so impressive! Makes me want to try a cathedral block. And the fabric just makes it even more dramatic. Very cool!

Terryt1955

Hey wait a minute. I just read that comment to True about Happy Birthday? Is this your birthday month??! What day?

Capetowngirl

Oh wow.... Aprils block is dynamic.

True

Terryt1955 I just LOVE this block and your picture captures this amazing fabric much better than mine!! And my birthday is in January (the 1st) but I am willing to celebrate it all year;-)

Terryt1955

True Happy belated birthday! You must have hated it growing up having a Jan 1st birthday? Then again everyone is off for the day celebrating your day...

Kathie

Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments. True , I must have misread a comment about your birthday . . . or got mixed up because April is my birthday month birthday !

True

Terryt1955 Actually I always liked it as I was off school or work and my parents always made sure it was special so I was lucky!

Kathie well happy birthday to you and again I don't mind celebrating as long as I do not have to add the years;-)

Mymble

I'm speechless....

True

Oh my love your process and that block is amazing!!

Quilterinmotion

Kathie , that's a beautiful block. I just picked up the 100 Blocks mag last night and loved that block immediately! Wow, what a gorgeous block and the colors you used are wonderful.

Kathie

Thank you Mymble , True , and Quilterinmotion ! This was another one that was hard to let go of but Margaret seems to like it so it's on it's way to a new home smile ! I am really loving this bee!

Laweigel

Love your paper-pieced block-so nicely done!

Terryt1955

Wow, your May block is unbelievable! I am so glad I stuck with the Newbee group because this intimidates the crap out of me. Gorgeous!!!

Kathie

Thank you Laweigel and Terryt1955 ! I really think that paper piecing is much easier than some of the other blocks we've done, just a little more time consuming.

Bluebirdsews

that May block is amazing! love the paper pieced block and the inspired colors you chose!

True

Oh Kathie I LOVE your July blocks...that fabric is awesome!!!

Kathie

True Thank you! I just love Whimsical collections and was excited when I saw this line was still around. What a fun block that was!

Skynme

I LOVE the little film strip block super cute choice of fabric

Mymble

Great green for this block Kathie!

Kathie

Mymble Thanks! I wish the true oliveish colors had shown in the picture but it does look good with True 's.

Mymble

OH I had a horrid time with my photo- my purples all came out looking crazy- maybe its the bright colors against the solid black ???- or maybe just me:((- but yours looks super!

Terryt1955

Kathie I saw this yesterday and then promptly got distracted in the paper piecing tutorial(S) and never circled back. It's beautiful! Love the ombre fabric too! Capturing the true colors is always a challenge, inside or outside.

Quilterinmotion

Kathie , the purple block is gorgeous.

True

Great November block!

Kathie

Thank you Quilterinmotion and True ! I love the purple but wasn't sure if it was "lavender" enough smile . . . I hope Jody likes it.

Quilterinmotion

Kathie , I love the block! I can't wait to see it in person. I just came over to see what you had updated; didn't expect to see my block! Thank you, thank you!

Kathie

Quilterinmotion I'm so glad you like it. You should see it soon, I'm just late posting this time as the last of my kids left for their home this morning.
