It's summer in the southern hemisphere and we're getting some scorching temperatures.  I need cool, non-restrictive clothes to survive it.  With an old damaged top for a pattern and some bargain-table Japanese seersucker fabric I picked up last week, I set to work.
I"ve done quite a lot of dressmaking in my cash-strapped younger days but with the advent of more low-price clothing outlets, expensive patterns and the time-poor state of motherhood, I'd actually thought my clothes sewing days were over.  Besides, there's all that quilting and knitting to be distracted by!  Now though, I find it's something I want to do.  As a plus size woman in my early 40's, I've found it difficult to get a range of clothing.  And I'm sick to death of wearing stretchy tops.  Don't get me wrong- they're comfy and very accommodating but I miss woven fabrics in my wardrobe.
However, even the pattern department is letting me down.  Most casual top patterns are sized for stretch knits only.  Of course, shirt styles are designed for woven material but they don't meet my summer requirements.  So I"m going to experiment, using bought tops as patterns or if I'm brave enough, completely winging it.

This top has a lace yoke, under bust seam with slight gathers for bust shaping and tapered sides.
I've faced the sleeves and neck with cotton tape and ended up putting a little bit of elastic in the centre front.

It's finished and I'm quite happy with it even though it gapes a little at the armholes.

Very cute top. I don't sew clothing anymore except for grandkids once in a while. Will you be making more of these?

Super cute!

Rebeccajeffsmith Thanks! Possibly I'll make more, although I have a short attention span (or perhaps it's just a long to-do list) - so it may be quite a while before I repeat the same thing. I have a couple of other ideas for two other prints I bought on the same day.

Whatthebobbin Thank you. :)

This is very cool. I was sad to read there isn't a pattern since you created it from an existing shirt. However, now I'm inspired to try copying some shirts too!
