Description

January - I finished my Maple Leaf block. Here's a great tutorial by Angela (+allpatchedup)  http://allpatchedupblog.blogspot.com/2013/01/maple-leaf-block-tutorial.html

February - I finished my Mod Nine Patch block for Mary (+True). She had commented on the fabric I used for a bag (^lacey-s-modern-diaper-bag) I made for my daughter-in-law and also gave us the link to a great pattern from Moda Bake Shop designed by Elizabeth Dackson from Don't Call Me Betsy: http://www.modabakeshop.com/2012/09/mod-nine-patch-quilt.html#more
I just may have to make myself this one as it's very cute!

March - I just finished my Double Hour Glass for +Curt in a flash! It took me twice as long to pick out the fabric as to make the block ! Once again Angela had a great tutorial to follow!

April - I can't believe I've finished my April block for +Juline so quickly! Thank you for the specifics and the great tutorial by Film in the Fridge on the Modified Bento Box Block. I can't wait to see it finished after you cut the squares.

May - What a fun block to make but I have to remember that if my block is going to end up on point, I need to set up my focus fabric differently.  Linda (+Linbur0100) asked us to make a Great Granny Square with specific colors for the rows. We used Bee in My Bonnet's tutorial. All done and on it's way to Virginia!

June - I only have a small window in which to finish this block and it is a wonderful beginner block! Rachel (+Existitchialism) asked us to use a tutorial for Courthouse Steps by Delaware Quilts. She asked that we use various shades of green and I just happened to have plenty. What fun that I have enough stash now to pick from in order to work on these great blocks! Well here goes as my little block travels from California to Illinois (another future place to visit).

July - +Tracy gave us a tutorial from The Sometimes Crafter for a Patchwork Square within a Square Block. What a fun block to sew but it did take me a bit of time to choose the right scraps. Thanks +Tracy for encouraging us to use the scraps we had, it helped to see just what I have ! All I have left is the signature and then it's off in the mail!

August - I had the opportunity to make my first Churn Dash block in some of my favorite colors for Mary (+Ladyreed)! She asked for blue or brown Churn with beige background and lots of bright colors for the 9-patch. What fun to go through my stash . . . and blue is definitely one of my favorites. Mary had this tutorial for us to make her Nine Patch in a Churn Dash Quilt Block. I went out of my "traditional" comfort zone and made the 9-patch more scrappy .

September - I really had fun with Audrey's (+HawkFan) Wonky House block for this month. I considered a haunted house (I love Halloween) but wanted to stick to something she could use. Having just bought some of the new Bluebird Park by Kate & Birdie Paper Co. for Moda, I found that I couldn't resist adding the owl that's in the tree in our back yard along with those cute hedgehogs (we actually have possums). The humming birds are still enjoying the flowers and I have a reddish brown door on my gray house as well as flowers in the front. I'm really tempted to keep this one . . .!

November - Sara chose a converging corners block using Film in the Fridge's tutorial. I had fun breaking into my Phenomenal Fall fabric along with various tone on tone creams. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

December - I love Simply Colors by V&Co and I thought they would be perfect for Sara's block. Though she let us choose, I decided to go with her suggestion and used this tutorial by Don't Call Me Betsy for the Patchwork Wheel block. Happy Holidays and New Year everyone!

Terryt1955

Well that's the pits that the tutorial wasn't that helpful. I read a similar complaint from someone else in your Hive so you're not alone.

Kathie

Terryt1955 , I think it works for someone who has had experience quilting and working with blocks. I just thought it didn't have enough direction for a "newbee" with quilting. It could be the teacher in me smile !

AllPatchedUp

Great block Kathie !

Yes, that tutorial did leave out some things..things that do tend to known by those that have been quilting for a bit. I'll be sure to watch tutorials more closely from here on out and doing up the tutorial myself earlier if needed. Lesson learned! :)

Juline

A big issue for me with the first tutorial is that it wasn't very well organized. The information was there, but my ADD brain needs bullet points and photos ;).

Quilbee

It turned out great!

Kathie

Quilbee Thanks! I hoped you would like it. Grand Finale is a beautiful line (I'm still working on my quilt using it).

Quilt455

Kathie, I think this block looks great. You did a really nice Job on it.

Juline

Yes, the quilt block does look great -- and it matches the ones I'll be sending (by Tuesday).

Terryt1955

Great tutorial Allpatchedup !. Thanks for posting it Kathie as I probably would have never known about it. What a great quilt this would make for my neighbors from Canada. That would be #20 on my list...

Terryt1955

Or if it was done in all different red and white prints on white background it would make an amazing quilt for me! Would that be tacky to use for my month?

AllPatchedUp

With all these bees, there's bound to be some duplicating going on. I don't think it's tacky at all....we had this discussion for one of the other hives already. heh Personally, I'd take it as a compliment. :)

True

I just LOVE this block with these fabrics...it looks so awesome in person, thank you!

Kathie

True You are so welcome! And if you're the one who checked me off on the list, thank you!

True

Kathie I did figured you could not access from where you were...and since I had it I knew you sent it;-)

AllPatchedUp

Love your February block Kathie! :)

Kathie

Allpatchedup Thank you! The picture doesn't really show the colors well but I'm still practicing my photo skills.

Quilbee

that center octopus is so cool!

beadqueene

I love the fussy cut octopus. So cute!

Kathie

Thank you Quilbee and beadqueene . I really like that octopus also smile !

True

Another great block for April great fabrics!

Terryt1955

LOVE the Great Granny Block! The text print is so cute. I am definitely making this one for my month because I want a great granny quilt soooo bad.

True

Great greens!!

Kathie

True Yes it is VERY green!

True

Kathie LOL that is how I felt about mine as well!!

Existitchialism

I LOVE it! Green is my son's favorite color right now, so the finished quilt is probably going to end up on his bed. :)

True

Existitchialism that is so cool!!

Kathie

Existitchialism I'm so glad you like it smile ! I just happen to have several different greens because my daughter-in-law likes those colors. It's been fun being able to use my stash lately. I can't wait to see how you put together your son's green quilt!

Mymble

Kathie your July block is stunning!

Juline

I love the bold prints you used in July's block.

Tracy

I love your, soon to be mine, block. smile I went through all my scraps when making this block. I now have them neatly (for now) organized into size.

True

I just love the choices you made for Tracy's block!!!! LOVE IT!

Skynme

Love the July block you just did, I need to add this to my super long things to do list. Great job on all the blocks!

Sewzalot

I love that Square in a square block! Thanks for putting the download on your post!

Kathie

True , Skynme & Sewzalot - Thank you, it was a fun block and I loved the challenge of arranging my various scraps so that they would coordinate smile .

HawkFan

Your August block is beautiful. Love the colors

Readerowl

Pinned your churn dash/nine patch. Love your colors. I'm collecting some churn dash blocks/quilts on Pinterest.

True

Love this color and fabric combo for this block...lovely

Countrygarden

Nice and bright. I really like the small squares in the center.

True

Your wonky house is so darn adorable!! Love it...

Tracy

Fantastic job! I love what you have done with your fabrics. You get an A+ for creativity. :)

HawkFan

Wow Kathie - I'm in love with the house (a haunted house would have been great too - we love Halloween at our house). You put so much thought in to this and it's so personalized - that means a lot to me!

Kathie

Thank you True and Tracy . It was a lot of fun but you can see why it seems to take me so long to get done . . . I spend a lot of time creating and auditioning fabrics. This one is completely different than what I started out doing smile !

Kathie

HawkFan , I'm so glad you like it! It was a lot of fun and my older daughter says its nice to see that I'm getting creative again. Hmmm . . . I guess I had been slacking off . . .

HawkFan

I know this was outside people's comfort zone so I'm glad it had a positive effect! You got me curious though about what you originally started with...

Kathie

HawkFan : Blue background (then yellow, then white with butterflies, then beige with dragonflys), no birds/animals except one owl, no tree or fence, all flowers for grass, grey roof the same color as the house but pebbly. I kept switching out fabrics as I finished piecing each section and now there is a mess in my sewing room grin !

HawkFan

Oops. I guess sometimes art is messy art

HawkFan

Kathie - you're Queen in October, right? Got your block picked out?

Kathie

HawkFan Yes, I think I know which one. . . just wasn't sure when to post AND I need to make my sample.

Quilbee

Wow your wonky house is amazing!

Readerowl

Best.wonky.house.ever!

Kathie

Thank you for your encouraging words Quilbee and Readerowl ! I really like it also and am missing it already smile . I think I'm making another one just for me . . . maybe even make one for each of my kids using their homes and making a wall hanging! Yikes, another project!!

Mrsquilt

I am in love with this wonky house too!

Capetowngirl

I love your Wonky House. Just gorgeous

Kathie

Thank you Mrsquilt and Capetowngirl ! It was a fun block to make, I highly recommend trying it!

HawkFan

Posted on the Hive2 thread too but I came home from a trip today to find your block in the mail. It really is gorgeous. Thank you so much!!

Kathie

HawkFan I'm so pleased you like it even more in person! It's one of my favorites so far.

True

What a pretty November block.

HawkFan

Love your fabrics and colors in the November block

Kathie

Thank you True and HawkFan . I still need to make myself something out of them . . . but they are fun to look at smile !

Mymble

Love your December block- how clever to use all the different colorways of the same print- so distinctive!

Whatthebobbin

Ohh I love that first block. The different colors of the same print are so fun together! Nice work.

Kathie

Thank you Mymble and Whatthebobbin ! I love Simply Colors and had fun with the piecing of the block.
