Description

This was a group challenge several years ago. Everyone in the group started out with the same fabric in the center and were to make it "bloom" from there in whatever direction we wanted.  Except for the center fabric, all the rest of the fabric came from my stash.  It took me much longer to finish because of the way I put it together....deliberately from the center out. I want to make another one and construct it in the normal way...but for now I am happy that this one is ready at last to be squared up and and QUILTED....I have a dark mottled fabric for the backing.

9-29-13 WHOOP WHOOP Quilt backing is loaded on frame along with Dream Cotton batting and today, the top will be stitched on to the backing/batting and I hope to get at least SOME time quilting today on this. The outer border is approx 6 inches, I want to do a vine/leaf type design. Plan on doing some marking w/ chalk/foam brush. Changed the backing fabric to a Kaffe Fasset zinnia print I bought a few years back with about 20 inches of a tiny purple flower print. Its rich looking and darker and a nice balance to the top. I put it on my bed and am so excited to see how it looks!

12-28-13  WHOOOP WHOOOP...OFF the long arm machine, time for binding next! I am going to do machine binding on this, attachine to the back first and using a decorative stitch on the front to tack it down. I will use the same variegated thread I used to quilt it to put the binding on.

3-16-14-  Binding complete, and its on my bed! Tried Sharon Schambers method of stitching binding from back side, glueing it to front. I would only recommend using this technique on straight grain binding, not bias. I had to remove the glue in a spot, which stretched the binding and now I have a wobbly bit on the side. May eventually take that out and redo it, but for now, I am just enjoying the completion!

Mymble Thank you! The colors did really well once I got the purple in there..purple always fixes things LOL

Caribousmom

Wow, this is just gorgeous! I love the value in this quilt...and it definitely "blooms!" Wonderful!

Jodyrose

Caribousmom Thank you! The bloom is what I was going for. I have seen some that are more Boston Commons like and then some that bloomed too much, I was trying to hit the middle :)

What an amazing quilt and how exciting that you're almost done.

Jodyrose

Carolmarie No its not hard. Its totally made up of 9 patches and plain square pieces, set on point. The "secret" to the bloom or pixel effect is the fabric choices. You start with 3 squares of plain fabric in the center and then make a row of 9 patches using the center fabric and another fabric that picks up one of the colors in the square round. You continue doing that all the way out.

Quilt455

Wow, this is wonderful. I can not wait to see how you quilt it.

Jodyrose

Quilt455 Thank you! I will probably do a general all over on the main body of it. The squares in the 9 patches are 1 1/2 inches, so not much else to do there. The outer border, which is not shown in the photos is about 6in wide and I plan on a meandering vine with leaves and scrolls.

Jodyrose Sounds beautiful. Waiting on pins and needles. hehehe

Almost there!!!! And what a finish this one will be...beautiful!

Jodyrose

Thanks Mary! I wrapped it around me when it came off the machine last night,am so happy it will be done and on my bed soon :) Next quilt will attempt more than scrolly meandering, but this one really called for no more than that.
