Description

These are two of the first quilts I did in late 80's back when I did most of it by hand.  I had made other things earlier than this but I gave away so no longer have them to photograph.

The first one is our "Family Tree".  Each leaf was a member of the family (on the tree dark green men, light green women on the ground were those who had died and the one small leaf was my niece who at the time was the only "child").  The leaves were placed as families.  Each block's name (I only still know one) represented something that made me think of my family...one represented birds, one a garden, one the ups and downs of family life and the last is called "Linked Stars" as we are all linked together.  The flowers and heart of the quilting represented love.  I did it all by hand except applique on tree itself.  It is only time I did applique the good old fashion way!  So many mistakes and things learned but I still have it hanging in my living room even though it no longer captures the family as we are today so much of what it represents is still a part of us:-)

The other was a wall hanging I did also all by hand and it hangs in my dining room/sewing room.

These two are very special. Love the thinking that went into the family tree, and the flower one is charming too. Lots of work. I'm not surprised you have them hanging in your home.

Those quilt are beautiful. I never would have guessed you were a beginner back then. I also love the meaning behind the quilts.

Readerowl Thank you...the woman who inspired me to learn to quilt was an amazing quilter and did it all by hand. She made the most incredible, gorgeous family quilt that inspired me but hers was stunning!

I love the family tree quilt! I like incorporating symbolism into quilts, like on my JJ & Hilary's Wedding Quilt.
