Description

This is the February block for the Hexie group "Get Your Hex On" - http://www.flickr.com/photos/70297961@N03/8375725728/

It's a year long group started by Stacey Napier of The Tilted Quilt http://thetiltedquilt.blogspot.com/2013/01/a-new-bee-hexagons.html

This is Stacey's block and her design is called Scrappy Hexie Love.  It was really fun to make- I would definitely do this one again. Thanks Stacey!

Off it goes in the mail tomorrow!

Update 3/8/13 This is the March block for the Get Your Hex On bee on flickr. Mara sent each of us a block with a scooter on it and strips of the patterned fabric, a 2 1/2" kona olive square and a block of white. The instructions were to do anything we liked except  that if your scooter went  to the left it had to be placed at the bottom and if it was going to the right then it had to go at the top- other than that we could do as we liked. It took a while to get an idea but I finally decided to do directional arrows and place the hexies like traffic lights or stop signs- loosely interpreted but it's there somewhat;)))

Update 3/9/13 So...when you sew at night...( some of you may know where I'm headed with this already....) and you are using whites, yup- they don't always match if one piece was the one provided and the other is your stash of Kona. And that may not be apparent in your sewing cave at night, but it is the next day when you snap the picture!!!

Yes, indeed-  I took the entire thing apart because two bits were a different shade of white- now really if I'd been using say greys- I really would have left it- wonky and cute right? But 2 slightly different whites? Nope- its seam ripper time. And since I was already in fix mode, I added 2 more hexies and topstitched them- just felt more balanced to me. So here it is- really done and really ready to fly over the ocean to Greece. Hope she likes it!

Update 4/7/13 April block finished- we received an ample pile of gorgeous blues in 3 shades and the assignment was to add some "objects" as if they were in the sea...so fun. I had some turtles left over from a baby quilt I did about a year and a half ago so they seemed right and I added some batik blues that reminded me of bubbles in the ocean- or maybe sea vegetation - either way the color went well:)

Update 5/6/13 This is the Hexie Butterfly for May-Everyone received a different color set- so the final quilt should be a wonderful collection of different hued butterflies! This was fun to make.

Update 6/17/13 - This is June's block for Chelsea- she sent us 3 "low volume" focal fabrics and we were to add our own that had a white or light background to complete the pattern. Mot of what I had that would qualify as "low volume" was in the black and white range so I stuck with that- just a few pops of color here and there. The "low volume" trend is nice- my stash just hasn't caught up yet;))). In any case, it all seemed to work and it was an easy and very fun block to work on.

Update August ( I forgot to take a picture of July- you can see on flickr for the group- mine was the deep dark red triangle)

Okay so August means it is my month as Queen and I chose this tutorial http://www.thesewingchick.blogspot.com/2012/09/a-tutorial-log-cabin-hexagon-block.html with the intention of making the quilt she shows from it. Thanks Tessa for permission to post your tutorial:)  Two peeps have sent blocks and three more have posted so far and they are incredible- I am loving each and every one. I sent fabrics from my organic/modern stash- primarily The Woodlands by Khristian A. Howell, Fox Hollow, The Birches and Ride- with a few odds and ends thrown in and a good dose of "Theory" - just about the wildest mix I have ever come up with. The sections in between in the quilt will be solid colors and I have 3/4 of a yard of the trees from The Woodlands for binding- will probably use a solid back of several colors- but I'll wait and see:)

Update 9/6/13 - Blocks have been coming for my month as Queen - loving them all- I will probably embroider the extra block with the solid center that MsSpy sent :) and I think there is one more on it's way- this was such a fun block- and great tutorial from +Thesewingchick ....thanks Tessa!

Update 9/22/13 Block for September- everyone got ( different colors ) set of solids and a toile background..make the ring and then sew invisibly to the background- another fun block.

Update 10/23 Block for October ...squashed hexies also known as Honeycombs- we each got the eight focal fabrics and a solid background- then after making the ring it is sewn onto the background (mine was a deep purple- like eggplant) with invisible stitches...half of us were to do "x"s and the other half + signs....this was a great block- goes on my hexie bucket list;)

Update 11/25/13 The block for November's Queen was a simple "rosette" pattern- fun to do:)

Update 12/31/13 This is the December hexie project- Sarah sent the fabric and asked for the four large flowers- they are very cute- the whole quilt of these is very impressive so I can't wait to see how she uses them. One thing I did note however is that pieced fabric is tricky for hexies- the added bulk and getting it to lay just right is a bit of a challenge. But the finished result is darling... and that's all that matters. I finished under the wire, but our post office closed at noon...I assumed they'd close early but noon?...sigh, so even though I did finished it by December, it will have to be mailed to Sarah on the 2nd ...

Update 1/30/14 Well there's nothing like the last minute and I got these done just in time... Janet sent all of us fabric from Hawaii and told us do any hexie arrangement we liked. I would have liked to come up with something wildly original but it just wasn't happening and time was running out so...when in doubt do a hexie flower...safe, but her cute fabric at least made up for my boring contribution. I believe she plans to applique all the different hexie designs onto a quilt...and at least one other person did flowers so mine won't be the only ones.

This is the last month for our group- Group 1. It was a fun year- with a wide range of hexie ( and some non hexie) projects.

Terryt1955

You are so clever!!! A great design!

Mymble

Terryt1955 Thanks- it was a fun challenge and I love the fabrics she chose so they were very fun to work with.

True

Love the fabric and love your creativity!! Another great block.

Sewzalot

Great design! Sounds like a fun group to be a parrt of. Love that scooter!

Mymble

True Thanks!

Mymble

Sewzalot Thanks- yes, I was a bit hesitant at first- since it feels like a huge responsibility to get an envelope of someone else's fabrics to make a block for them and I don't want to disappoint but- hexies are so fun and everyone is very easy going.

Yes- the scooters are sooo cute- it's called the Havana Collection- it's an organic cotton I believe.

TxQltr

Great hexies! What do you think of the pieced hexies?

Mymble

TxQltr Thanks Had to look up what pieced hexies were- really interesting- will definitely want to give them a try!

Joke

I love that ocean one with the turtles! I bet it will look amazing once complete

Mymble

Joke Thanks- yes- she picked a good theme and the colors are great- should be wonderful.

Capetowngirl

Your butterfly is stunning

Quilterinmotion

My first look at your hexies projects here. Lovely! Very clever use of the hexies. I am curious about "scooters". Is that the name for that shape? I've never heard it before.

Mymble

Quilterinmotion Thanks! The scooters were fussy cut from the fabric ( Havanna by Monaluna) and she asked us to place them either lower right corner ( if they were headed to the left) or upper left corner ( if they were headed right)- then we could do whatever we liked with the rest of the fabric she provided:)- that month was a fun challenge.

Mymble

Capetowngirl Thanks- the "queen" for the month chose the fabric- it was a cute design and easy to make so I may make some more from my stash if time allows:)

Quilterinmotion

Mymble , did she call those shapes scooters or is that shape known everywhere as "scooters"? I'm definitely learning something new with this!

Mymble

Quilterinmotion Well...the scooters are also called mopeds in some places and I don't know enough about makes to know if the ones on this fabric are meant to be Vespas or not- (my daughter wants a Vespa but I am nervous about them being dangerous) but anyway Mara- the designer of that block referred to them as "scooters" - she lives in Greece:)))

gale

Cute hexie projects!! I see them on so many blogs and want to try but I hate doing hand sewing.

Mymble

gale I hear you...A long project with hexies can do in my fingers...this is one time i always use a thimble...but you can do hexies by machine...larger ones especially...forget which but one of the current quilt mags covers how to...and there's probably a tutorial online for machine hexies too...there's a tutorial for everything:)

Capetowngirl

Mymble I know what you mean about scooters being dangerous. A young girl of 16 was killed over here by a large car that then fled the scene. Thankfully they tracked him down. There is no way my daughter wll be allowed one.

Mymble

Capetowngirl Well there you go- that does it for me- I think that as vehicles they probably are no worse than any other moped- the problem as I see it is that people don't know how to drive with them on the road or the scooter drivers themselves take unwarranted risks- we have the same problem with cyclists here in Baltimore and have had several fatalities.

Capetowngirl

Mymble our biggest problem here I think is drivers contempt for cyclist, motor bikes etc. Big problem.

Mymble

Yes- exactly- some places do it better than others but it's never an easy co-existence I think!

Quilterinmotion

Oh, silly me! I was looking at the various shapes in the block and didn't even notice the Scooter/Vespa!!! You can laugh at me; it's okay. Now I know what you are referring to and yes, I think that would qualify as a Vespa. Thanks for the indulgence here.

Mymble

Quilterinmotion LAWY (laughing along with you) - well I couldn't be sure what you were looking at so I assumed you meant the Vespas- funny:) - hey maybe we can start a new trend- we can call hexies floating free on a block....scooters...yay ( now let's see how long that takes to catch on- you and I know we said it first!!!!!)

Quilterinmotion

Mymble , thanks for not making me feel to stupid!!! I hadn't seen LAWY before but like it. Scooters...my not??? You saw it here first, ladies!!!

Mymble

Quilterinmotion ...I made LAWY up- when I responded to you...but of course that doesn't mean a thing with regards to the web...somewhere out there someone else has probably already said it- originality is very hard to come by these days- but at least its mine for now, and scooters- that's definitely ours:)))))

Quilterinmotion

Mymble , that's why you got a Vespa on your block!! It's definitely ours!

True

These are incredible blocks...this is going to be an amazing quilt

Mymble

Didn't they all do a great job? I had a stash bag of organic scraps so this was the perfect project for them:)

Mymble

Drnic2c

Love the large pink and green flowers

Mymble

Drnic2c Thanks Nicole!
