I made this for my niece for Christmas using Spoonflower fabric
. It was supposed to be a simple lined tote, no bottom, regular straps. But I wanted her to be able to carry books, etc. in it, so I wanted to make it more sturdy. I decided to quilt it, add a side panel to give it a box shape, and make a messenger bag handle since that is what she prefers. Using this approach, I was actually able to get two
bags from the panel, which was a great bargain . This was my most challenging project to date, and I was afraid she might not appreciate it, being in that teenage phase when they appreciate all things storebought more than homemade. BUT
thankfully, she totally  :heart:ed it.. I quilted around all the lines on the TARDIS except the writing for the front. On the back I did a chevron pattern between the glasses. And for the sides/bottom panel, I used a zig-zag stitch to make lines shortways across the panel. I quilted all the pieces before construction, so that left me with "raw" edges inside the bag. So then I had to bind the inside edges of the bag. I wouldn't have it any other way, because she loves it so much. But honestly I haven't made the second one yet...it was that traumatizing...
