Description

This year my 8 year old requested that I remake the Easter dress I had made for her the year before, just in a different color. So I measured her (two inches taller, same circumference) and she and I went to pick out fabric.

She selected a pretty blue satin, with a nicely-matched sheer overlay for the overskirt. Last night we laid out the pattern and added the length in the skirt. I taught her to pin the paper and fabric together. We worked on using the scissors smoothly. It's hard!

Besides adding length, I modified the pattern by making the bodice fully lined instead of self-faced. The facings had a habit of flipping up, which was annoying, and she complained about the scratchiness of the sheer at the waistline. Both of those will be solved by a full lining.

Pretty fabric. I remember learning how to pin the tissue pattern to the fabric and my fingers just could not handle it. There is a set of fine motor skills unique to sewing. It is great that she is working with you to make her dress.

I am sure she will be so proud to wear this dress as she has had such a big part in making it! Wonderful that she is learning sewing skills!

She will always have this memory of you showing her how to sew. I have so many wonderful memories of my grand-mother teaching me! I can't wait to see this.

Charwirfs It is weirdly specific. I think next time I will take the table protector off! No need to make it harder.

Jschlender I am lucky that my kids still think that wearing things I make them is cool. I will miss it when it isn't for a while.

Dgriffin2 Thanks! I love doing things like this with both my kids.
