Description

Needed a nice lap quilt for a young man and this pattern has been calling to me for some time.  Fabrics are batiks from my stash with the large red dragon the inspiration for the name.  Very easy to piece "Fire Escape" from Atkinson Designs.  Fortunately I stopped to take an initial photo and noticed a turned unit - even on a top this easy!

Top together 4/6/2013 - measures 56 x 70.
5/28/2013 Completed quilting - used gold thread and quilted dragons, oriental motifs and waves. Used Hobbs 80/20 batting and MagnaSoft thread plus wonderful magnetic core bobbins. Am putting together a new binding technique to give the effect of a piping - hope it works out. 5/30/13: playing with binding. Cut black fabric at 1.5" and the gold (piping) 1.75". Seamed and then pressed toward the black. Final pressing shows the small gold piping. Will stitch back and then turn to the front- tomorrow. 6/1/13: complete- bound, washed and blocked. Love the way the binding turned out and will definitely use again.

Wow! That dragon is amazing! I hope you'll share your binding technique if it works out. Sounds like fun!

Excuse my ignorance but - is this hand or machine quilting?

Sbbquilter

crimsonrabbit This was certainly done on the long arm machine - I am flattered that you think that I could accomplish that by hand! I enjoy piecing a relatively plain top to embellish with heavy quilting.

I was ready to be amazed and very impressed if it had of been by hand smile Love the design of the quilting, whatever the method though clap
