Description

I can't really get into the hexie shape, so I went with these. 2" octagons and chrysanthemum petals, ordered from Paper Pieces. I'm almost out of templates, so I need to start sewing them together or make my own templates. Or both. My first real scrappy project.

Question: This is my first scrap quilt, and I'm unsure how to go about it. I've read that values count more than coordinating colors/prints, but how would I distribute light/dark values in a quilt of this design? Two of each in each flower? Or?

4/22/13 I need more templates, so I had to start stitching the pieces together.  I'm doing my best to just mix the light/dark values, and I think I've decided to use just one fabric for the perimeter of the quilt. Now I just have to pick that fabric. I'm glad to finally have a hand project again, and I'm really enjoying the process.

Finally started stitching them together.

Looking good so far. To decide where you want your dark values & light values convert the picture to greyscale and then you will see them, and play around from there. I fully agree with you about the hexie shape (I had a bad experience in primary school that has put me off them) I am also drawn to octagons and I love this variation.

Thanks for that tip! A bad hexie experience?! Sounds traumatic ;).

This is fantastic - never seen octogons before. Next project maybe?
