Description

This dress was inspired by a Spring 2013 Antonio Melani dress I saw during a shopping trip at Dillard's.  I absolutely loved the dress, but the $160 price tag was a bit more than I was willing to spend at the time. So, I decided to try to make something in the same style, but with a little bit more of my flair.

I started by looking for a pattern that would serve my needs.  I needed a dress with princess seams and a seam at the waist to make the dress work.  I finally decided on Kwik Sew pattern K3783.

For my fabric, I wanted a funky color palette.  I started with a great teal linen, and purchased some pretty white eyelet fabric to dye red for my overlay.  I had to dye the fabric twice to get the color right, but I think it was worth the time.  It's going to be a fun dress when it's done.

**Update 04/28/2013**
I finished this dress today.  It's not lined at this point, but I may go back and line it sometime (if I get bored).  I made a few changes to the pattern after making my muslin.  I'm really pretty happy with it.  I'll try to get a few good photos in the next few days, if the weather cooperates.

**Update 05/02/2013**
It was nice out today, so I wore my new dress to work, and then took a few photos in the afternoon.  I hope you enjoy them.

Love the red fabric you chose...I wouldn't have thought to use the teal...but it looks great! Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Mymble

Great ideas- looking forward to seeing this bloom:)

Bluebirdsews

this is going to be super fun! I like your design choices ;)

engiknitter

Love the color combo, and the fact that you dyed the red!

Mymble

Wow- great job- so when are you trying out for project runway????

Mouseinmypocket

Mymble I think with Project Runway, they don't like you to use patterns. I'd be lost starting from scratch. Just happy to be where I am.

Mouseinmypocket

engiknitter Thanks so much! I had a lot of fun with this project. I just hope it doesn't look "Christmasy" out in the daylight.

Mouseinmypocket

Bluebirdsews Thanks so much! I'm having a lot of fun getting to be creative.

Mary Carolmarie Thanks for stopping by ladies. I'd love to know what you think of the finished dress.

Mymble

Mouseinmypocket Hmmm- yes, but keep going as you have done and you'll be drafting your own soon enough- you already are partially...great skill to have even without the stress of "Make it work people"!!!

Rebecca

Fantastic job! I don't think it looks "Christmasy" at all. It has more of a tropical feel IMO.

Mary

I love the outcome...very cute and cheerful!

Amanda

I'm so inspired by all your dress-making! I've been looking at patterns like crazy lately trying to decide where to start (as in, what will be not too hard and at least sort of flattering)

Justine

Amanda Try out the Colette Patterns Sewing handbook. It's what I started with. The book has 5 projects - a skirt, a top, and 3 dresses.

Mouseinmypocket

Justine I've been waiting for good sunny weather. It looks like it will be nice tomorrow.

Mouseinmypocket

Justine oh! and I'm so excited to see what you come up with for your eyelet fabric.

Rebecca Mary Carolmarie Thanks ladies!

Amanda

Mouseinmypocket I've been thinking about getting that. I'm very unexperienced at clothes making - do you think it's ok for beginners?

Mouseinmypocket

Amanda it really is for beginners. The first chapter is about the basics of what you need, pins, needles and the like. The book basically assumes you know nothing. It was the very first thing I started from to learn sewing clothes.

Justine

Mouseinmypocket so sorry so long in getting back to you!1 your dress is awesome! i love it! i havent made or even died my fabric yet! lol my daughters both teach school and have me doing projects for them and making shirts for the start of school.. hope to post pictures soon!! oh well..someday i will sew for me! lol justine
