Description

This one is for my younger brother. He has been an air traffic controller for the Navy and Army for 37yrs. He was diagnosis with pancreatic cancer last month and had to retire. Living 3000 miles apart has always been hard but now it is even harder. I made this for him because I can't be there to hug him everyday so this quilt has to take my place. I have finished the top and will be working on the back starting tomorrow. Not sure if I am going to quilt it or have it quilted. Time is an issue for me and I want to get it sent off to him.

5/26/13 Finally got my back pieced! Wow it feels like it has taken my forever to get this quilt done. I like out the back turned out so that is good. Have to do a couple of small projects tomorrow since I am on a deadline for them; then I will get this one pinned and quilted. I was going to send it out for quilting but decided since I do not want to take away from the blocks with a overall design, I am going to guilt it myself with very simple lines. Haven't totally decided on how yet but will while I am pinning it.

06/20/13: Completed quilting on Wednesday and wanted to share it with my friends Wendy and Conni. Off in the mail tomorrow. I am so excited for him to get it. The first time I have ever labeled a quilt or done a blanket stitch by hand, no perfect but I still love how it all came together.

I'm so sorry to hear about your brother. Will be praying for him. I;m sure he will love this quilt.

Skynme

I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers. Love the quilt, and Im sure it will bring him much joy and comfort.

caldwella24

Thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Much thought and love went into this quilt, and it shows!

Such a great guy quilt and loved how you used patriotic specialty fabric throughout and yet it doesn't look like a recruiting poster. Very special! You get it to him fast because this will surely cheer him up. I bet if you go to your local long arm person and tell them the need for the urgency they'll push it to the top of the list. And if they don't you should never go back to them again. So sorry to hear that your brother is so ill and so far away from you.Sending hugs.

Aw Cathie....this turned out great. You did such a nice job and your brother is going to cherish it. For those that know you...we can truly feel the love between brother and sister. What a wonderful gift. Hugs to you both. :)

Blessings to your brother. I would suggest maybe just tying this one at each block corner and in the middles. It would be quicker and you could get it sent off to him. He is not going to be picky about whether or not it is quilted and I think by tying it, it may be a little puffier and softer to wrap around him.

Speattle

Or do a simple outline of each block or in the ditch on your sewing machine. Use a walking foot. I wouldn't do a lot of fussy quilting on this one.

Sewzalot

I love America and The Navy!! This is a feel-good quilt with all of the great Navy prints and the great colors.

Sewhappy

This quilt is so bright and cheery. I am sure it will bring your brother lots of comfort no matter how it is quilted! :-)

Caribousmom

Oh my gosh, Cathie - this came out SO great! I totally love it!!! I hope I get to see it in person before it is shipped off BIG hugs to you

Quilt455

Rebeccajeffsmith Thank you. We will take all the prayers we can get.

Quilt455

Skynme Thank you. I hope that he enjoys it as much as I have making it for him.

Quilt455

caldwella24 Thank you so much. My seams may not be straight but he will know that I was thinking of him; which it the important thing.

Quilt455

Terryt1955 Thanks Terry. I decided that I wanted to quilt it myself with simple lines. I guess I just need to do the whole thing myself. And Wendy keeps assuring me that I can do it. So we will see.

Quilt455

Conniharns My Friend, I would be lost without you and Wendy. You are what is meant by a true friend. Thanks for all your support. Hugs

Quilt455

Speattle I am not much into tied quilts but I am going to take your suggestion and do simple block outlines. That way it will not take too long but will be sewn completely by me; which seems to be so important to me right now. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sewzalot I decided to do Navy since he went in at age 17 and retired at 37; so 20 yrs in the navy. Then we went to work for the Army but I will always consider him a sailor. I am glad that you think it is happy because that is what I was going for, did not want a "sad" quilt. Thanks so much

Quilt455

Carolmarie Thank you. We are a very "huggy" family so hopefully he will feel the love I feel for him each time he uses it.

Quilt455

Sewhappy Thank you. It does bring smiles to my face as I work on it. Hopefully, it will also bring him a smile or two.

Quilt455

Caribousmom Oh my friend, I would never send it off without you getting to see it first. Without your help, I would still be a the drawing board! And using an ugly red color. hehehe. Thank you for all your support; it means more to me than you know.

Terryt1955

The top looks great! Hoping you have smooth sailing (hahah) on getting the quilting done.

Sewbusy64

Awesome!

True

I do not know how I missed this... Love it and he will too! I am so sorry and I am sending the two of you loads of positive energy and thoughts. The plan of straight line quilting will be perfect...good luck getting it done and soon it will be off to him!

Quilt455

Sewbusy64 Thank you so much

Quilt455

True Thank you. I took a break today to make a couple of small projects but plan on pinning tomorrow night then quilting it this weekend. I will post updated pictures soon. Thanks for the thoughts and positive energy.

Mymble

It's truly wonderful -you did a fantastic job on it and I think it will mean a great deal to your brother. I don't think there is another handcraft that can carry the message of love quite as well as a quilt:)

Quilt455

Thank you Mymble. I agree nothing else says love like a quilt.

Joke

It looks fantastic Cathie!

Terryt1955

You did it and it looks great!! I'm sure he's going to feel so touched by this quilt!

True

What a wonderful job you have done on this quilt! The back is amazing all on its own:-)

Quilt455

True Thanks. I am so excited about it. My machine is not the easiest to quilt on so I wasn't looking forward to trying to do it on my own and Wendy kept encouraging me so I gave it a try and am so happy I did. I am so learning to go pass my comfort zone with all the encouragement I get from people like you!!!!!!

Conniharns

Oh Cathie...this quilt is so wonderful..was so nice to be ale to see this in person. I know the special meaning it holds for you and I know your brother will be speechless!! It is a beautiful quilt made from the heart. Hugs :)

Quilt455

Conniharns Thank you my friend. I am on pins and needles until he gets it. hehehe
