Description

The Improvi robin is a small round robin and this is my center block. The turtle fabric was a favorite of mine that I had used in a baby quilt and I had a small bit left over. The batiks are Moda Rainbow batiks and the orange vegetation fabric is Oceanica.

The Improvi Robin is basically do anything you like in each succeeding round- not following a theme or color palette- so my goal was to have a good variety of colors to inspire the next round....here it comes everyone...have fun with it- and I'm looking forward to all the other centers making their way around!

Update 6/8/13 +Chrissybugs block arrived yesterday- a wonderful sunny star.   It is sitting close by my machine for inspiration and I  have pulled some fabrics  -  am mulling away- the  2 questions before me right now are a)  do I go all the way around - one idea has presented itself;) - or do I do an off center design- am sort of leaning this way.....   and b)- do I go with the colors here, or go to complimentary colors and veer off.....hmmmm....decisions, decision, decisions....this is fun!..... I think I will let it stew over the weekend and of course suggestions welcome:)

Update...Here's Christine's block...with my additions...Madrona Road.

Update 8/10/13 +Rebeccajeffsmith 's   (Rebecca) and  +DrNic2c  's   (Nicole)  blocks arrived today with Christine's additions...and I am in thinking cap on mode...but never fear ladies- I will set my thinking cap on super speedy and sew as fast as I can  :)))

Update: 8/19 Rebecca and Nicole's additions are done- I used Indigo Crossing ( I knew I was saving it for something!!!) for the stars on Rebecca's and used a polka dot batik ( love how I just happened to have that batik) and some of Nicole's fabric for the border on hers. Look out Patty +Kruppcake - they are coming your way;))

Photo update 9/20- better light today and the new shoes begged to be included. Trying to get a photo that shows the teeny tiny point on my middle star- it was a really tight squeeze for that one, but it looks so chunky in the photo, but it is technically all there- hoping the quilting will reveal the point once the seam allowance is sewn flat- sigh what is perfectionism for I ask you,  if you can't drive yourself nuts with it????

Update 10/11 - I posted a before photo of Patty's center with Christine's addition....will post it with mine as soon as I can get some decent light- we are in our second day of almost nonstop rain:)

Update 10/12 Ok well it looks like rain is here to stay so please excuse the gloomy light in the picture but here is Patty's center with my addition- rainbow arrows.

My addition to Patty's center
This is Patty's center with Christine's addition- just finished my turn and will post as soon as I can get a good pic in our dreary rainy weather!
Better in sunlight, and so much better with shoes ;))))
Better shot in the sunlight and I think my new feet go well with it don't you?
Rebecca's center, Nicole's round and Christine's stars...my turn now!
Nicole's center, Christine's addition...now it's here!
My additiions to Christine's center star.
+Chrissybugs center- so many good choices- which way to go?

Mymble

Thanks- they are even more beautiful in person- hope everyone has fun with it!

crimsonrabbit

Love how the fabrics work to create a magical undersea vista for the cute little turtle smile

Capetowngirl

Gorgeous

Mymble

crimsonrabbit Thanks so much- that was where I was trying to get to-glad you like it:)

Mymble

Capetowngirl Thanks so much!

True

Love this one too that turtle is amazing.

Kruppcake

Very nice. I even see some pink in the turtle. Can't wait!

Mymble

True Thanks- I do love those turtles and it was tough to decide whether to use the turtle for the Round and Round robin or for this one- but I decided that since the Improvi robin is more...well..improvisational;)- then all the colors in the turtle would be a good launch.

Mymble

Kruppcake So glad you like it- it's swimming your way:)_ I'll probably mail it on Saturday:)

Chrissybugs

Your block reminds me of the 6 weeks I got to spend in Hawai'i. We saw so many turtles!! Great center!

True

Love Chrissybugs center cannot wait to see what you do!!

Mymble

So many ways to go with this one- and Improvirobin guidelines being a bit more free flowing than a regular robin- well anything goes- think it needs some serious mulling because I have too many ideas right now- will let them bump around and shake down;))))

Terryt1955

I see what you mean about so many decisions on which way to go! I like the idea of the off center idea or at least what I think what you mean by off center.I'll be looking forward to what you decide!

Clairealex

Designing is such fun in round robins. I did one that was as free as yours, and it was great. I've also done one where the only direction was how many fabrics to send along (for continuity--we could also add our own) and what size border to make. It will be fun to keep up with progress and results here.

Quilt455

I am so enjoying the progress of these blocks. I love your additions and Christine's block is great.

Mymble

Thanks- it felt risky ( LOL) to me to do something not traditionally square but once I looked over all the Improvi Robin sample blocks on Flickr and saw the direction they were going I thought- why not- and it just seemed to fit- I'll be really interested to see how Patty builds upon the "farm" :)))

True

Love that you have added!

Chrissybugs

I love my barn!!! Never even thought of that! Thanks, Margaret.

Mymble

Chrissybugs So glad you like it Christine!- trying to think outside the box wound me up in the field with a barn and a tractor et al...this Improvi Robin is really a good way to stretch my thinking and learn to take chances! The only bad part if the nerves... hoping you would like it:)

Charwirfs

These are turning out so cool. I signed up for the next round. Looking forward to getting going on it. I am finishing up another RR this month and we have kept our rounds secret. Can't wait to see how mine looks when we meet later this month.

Mymble

Charwirfs Great- the new group is super- you will have a blast! And I'll be on the lookout for when you are able to share the pics from your other RR!

Mymble

Charwirfs Just saw the one you worked on- really great!

Charwirfs

Wow Mymble, you really commented fast. Thanks! How soon will the new group get going?

Mymble

HawkFan is your group's moderator- so you should check with her- I think she has some posts up in the Improvi Robin on the Home page- so if you troll through her posts there should be some details there, and if I remember correctly a number of the group's members are traveling this week so if you don't hear back right away, not to fret, that is more than likely the reason:) but my understanding is the group is starting failry soon:) - hope that helps!

HawkFan

Charwirfs & Mymble I don't think you're talking about my group. I haven't seen any posts about Charwirfs joining and we're up to 6 now. Must be a different group (I hope it is)

Mymble

HawkFan Same group but confirmations closed Aug. 8th- (post #14 listed all interested parties and notified them) so if someone didn't confirm by then, they are in the next pool to form a group- which will mean we will have three groups- woo hoo! Charwirfs if this is you then you are actually the beginning of the third group- and judging by the interest- your group should fill up soon too! So excited to see all the Improvi activity!

Chrissybugs

Mymble, Nicole added a round before I added to one side. (I think, check the book Rebecca sent with it.)

Mymble

Chrissybugs You are absolutely right- thanks for the heads up- I had forgotten!

Drnic2c

Mymble Chrissybugs
Christine, great job on the blocks. I can't wait to see what wonderful additions Mymble makes.

Mymble

My cauldron is brewing as we speak...ideas are swirling around...hoping to work some Improvi magic real soon;))) wink

HawkFan

Both look great. You did such a nice job in keeping some of the elements of the original. Magic is right!

Mymble

HawkFan Thanks- had to let it brew for a bit- but after I did some stash digging I found the right ingredients- it's really frightening what I find at the back of the shelf- think I need to do some serious stash organizing;))))

Kruppcake

Both are fabulous! My turn!!! Yay!!

Mymble

Thanks Patty- I know you will do something awesome with them:)

True

LOVE them...wow you really made these work:-)

Drnic2c

Mymble
I love the polkadots. Thank you.

Mymble

Thanks Nicole! Glad you like them :)

Rebeccajeffsmith

Mymble I just love your creativity!!

HawkFan

I love the rainbow arrows. They really bring out the colors of the original center and draw the eye back there. Wow

Mymble

Thanks- that was basically what I was trying to do- this one took a lot of thinking cap energy because at first I was really stumped;)))- love the round robin for stretching my eye and my skills:)

True

Love what you added and you clearly achieved your goal!

Mymble

True Thanks Mary:)

Charwirfs

Rainbow chevrons! Great add.

Mymble

Charwirfs Thanks- they were so fun to do:)

HawkFan

Mymble - that's why I signed up for a round robin too - to stretch myself and it has been a stretch (but a fun one so far). You've done great things on all of yours

Kruppcake

Mymble I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!

Mymble

Kruppcake :))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Rebeccajeffsmith
