Description

June 29, 2013:

I was so excited to get the new book by Camille Roskelley: Simply Retro (published by Stash Books and released this month). Then I discovered there was a group of quilters doing a sew along for the book here. And of course, there is also a Flickr group to share quilts made from the book.

The first project is called Swell. It is a quilt suited well for scraps and uses 2.5" strips (so it is also perfect for a Jelly Roll).

I dragged out my homemade Jelly Rolls which I've made by cutting scraps which are WOF into 2.5" strips. Do you remember my ^fresh-palette-summer-quilt ? I had lots of left over 2.5" WOF scraps...and those, along with some other low volume scraps, are what I am using to make the Swell quilt. I also managed to pull out two large cuts of fabric which I bought at my local quilt store for $2 a yard (yes, you read that right!!!) and I'm going to use those for the border and backing on the quilt. I will have enough left over scraps for a scrappy binding as well.

I have a few blocks done...but the arrangement of them is ongoing on my design wall for now!

October 19, 2013 Update: Top is completed! I finished piecing it today and added the border...so now I just have to do a quilt sandwich and quilt it ... no new photos yet, but soon.

October 20, 2013 Update: Okay - finally got a photo up. I'm excited that I only used scraps for this quilt top (except for the white background and the border). The border is a print from Anna Griffin designer and cost me only $2 a yard at my LQS!!!

August 6, 2014 Update: This one is finished! I used a big piece of fabric from the Simplicity collection by 3 Sisters for Moda for the back and binding - another great sale find that cost me only $2 a yard. I decided to do small loopy quilting on this quilt because it felt right (FMQ). This quilt measured a final 58" X 70" - I ended up having to trim off some of my border to get it square as I did not cut my backing large enough (don't ask!).

Skynme

I love her she is one of my favorites. Have both of her books. This turned out lovely! You did an amazing job as always. Thanks for sharing the sew along link.

Readerowl

Guess I need to put that book on my wish list. this certainly is a fresh happy looking quilt.

Caribousmom

Readerowl There are some great quilts in this book! I can see myself making several of them!

Skynme I love Camille's patterns too - and I like big block quilts which this book has plenty of... Thanks for the nice comment -

True

Love your fabric choices...may have to check out this book I so love her my excuse could be I am supporting her;-)

Quilt455

Oh my gosh, you just showed me this book yesterday and you have already gotten this much done. Love the fabric choices. I totally love the yellow fabric you are going to use for the back. So, not including the battering this quilt is going to cost you under $10. Pays to save all those scraps and visit that $2 wagon. hehehe. Going to love watching this one.

Skynme

I'm sure you already know but if you are a craftsy member she has her pre cut piecing class where she teaches you how to make her swoon quilt which is gorgeous.

AllPatchedUp

This is gorgeous Wendy!! Low volume is such a great look.

I too am a huge fan of Camille's work, her ideas and fabrics and patterns are always just so......gorgeous!

Caribousmom

AllPatchedUp Thank you! I am including some pops of color - but mostly this is going to be a "gentle" low volume type quilt :) I told my hubby that if I was forced to ONLY purchase fabric from one designer - it would be Bonnie and Camille. I love everything they do.

Skynme Thanks! I do know about Camille's Craftsy classes...but I don't need to take her Swoon quilt class because I already made it here: Swoon in Etchings hee hee.

Quilt455 Well, you know I am totally obsessive :) I am so psyched about how I am able to make this quilt totally from scraps (binding too) AND my border and backing cost me almost nothing...and I have batting that will take care of this quilt too. This is when I am glad I have a stash :)

True Thanks! You will love this book - it is awesome!!!

AllPatchedUp

Well of course...who doesn't like a lil 'splash' of color!! ...you know I'm a fan!! lol ;)

Caribousmom

AllPatchedUp LOL (I can't resist using red...no matter what!)

AllPatchedUp

Red is a fabulously 'splashy' color!! :D

Stamdl

So pretty... I think her books are great too - I have the 1st one and I'm sure I'll pick up this one too. LOVE your fabric choices!!

Skynme

Well of course you have already made the swoon quilt...Obviously you are a 1 woman quilt factory. Do you ever sleep? LOL Either way, still another amazing quilt, and now that I am not on my cell phone I see the little turtles and frogs so I love it even more. Great Job!

Conniharns

Oh Turbo....here we go again! Another beauty made from scraps...geesh! This is going to be so pretty....light and airy. BTW Skynme...she definitely is a factory..that works 24/7!!! If not sewing then planning the next project!! She designs in her sleep!! XO Wendy!!!

Caribousmom

Conniharns Ha ha, Connie!!! You do know, don't you, that I named the neighbor's dog Turbo years ago - he was a big lab that never stopped moving!! So I am a little obsessed...at least I am productive LOL!

Skynme LOL - yes, I sleep because I need to recharge my batteries so I can sew more!! Ha ha. I love those little turtles and frogs too - I had one 2.5" strip of each of those fabrics left over from a baby quilt and I thought they fit perfectly for this quilt :)

Stamdl Thank you! I have her first book too. She is so talented!

Slicksister

I love this quilt, I love Camille and now I love you, too! Faboulous!!!!

Caribousmom

Slicksister Aw, thank you!

Conniharns

Can I see...can I see please?!!!

Caribousmom

Conniharns lol...yes. I'll bring it to work and show u!!!

Conniharns

Yea...as she jumps for joy!! Sorry I missed you Friday.

Terryt1955

I'm so glad to see you back at the machine and creating your lovelies! I bet your machine missed you too. This is gorgeous with all your fabric scraps. Can't wait to see the next photos!

Caribousmom

Terryt1955 thanks! Feels good to be sewing again :)

True

Back in the saddle!! Is your machine happy since it got cleaned? And cannot wait for updated pictures ;-)

Caribousmom

True lol! Machine seems quite happy now that the grime and lint have been cleaned from its insides!!!

True

I love that border and IMHO it some how ties the quilt together in a new and different way than before it was added. And I went from really
Iiking it to absolutely loving it (not that that matters;-).

Caribousmom

True Thanks, Mary - I thought that as well. I love scrappy quilts, but I also like to bring a unifying print in when possible - I had that border fabric in my stacks of large cuts and when I pulled it down it really seemed to pull the whole thing together because it was the right shade of pinkish-red and lowish volume. Glad you love it :)

Carolmarie I hadn't heard that phrase before ("planned scrappy") but I would imagine this fits the bill. This is a jelly roll quilt and I was eager to use some of my 2.5" WOF scraps that I had sorted by color coordination and made my own jelly rolls with. Much of this fabric came from another quilt I made and had left over fabric from - and then I pulled other prints which I thought worked well. So it is scrappy - but all the colors work together. Like you, I cringe a little at being too random (although I have seen plenty of very random scrappy quilts which I love).

Skynme

I wish I could LOVE this some more, but you can only click that darn button once. I love that pattern and the fabric you chose...I don't think I can bring myself to make another one any time soon sine the "incident". I will just have to keep admiring yours and thinking they need to add more buttons.

Caribousmom

Carolmarie LOL - Well, I say go for it - I totally trust your design sense and whatever you do I am sure will be gorgeous!!!

Skynme Aw, thanks so much! This is a fun pattern - and a great way to use up scraps!

Mymble

Another beauty- love the soft feel of the fabrics and the pattern...so lovely!

True

Wow love the quilting and the whole feel...and I am so not asking about what we are not suppose to ask about;-). Beautiful and makes me want to cuddle in with a good book.

Caribousmom

True Thanks! It is really crinkly which I love...and I especially love that it is all made from scraps and fabric that cost less than $3 a yard!!!

HawkFan

For some reason, I didn't see this one when you first posted it. It just looks right at home on that porch swing - that's the feeling it evokes in me. Love the backing too and the quilting is wonderful

Caribousmom

HawkFan It has a very summer-like feel, Audrey. I have a soft spot for these "sweet" qulits :)

Carolmarie Thanks, Carol. I quilt my quilts on my home machine (Janome 6600)...:)

Readerowl

Wonderful finish. I love the label.

Quilt455

Yup, it is wonderful and the back fabric is great. I love the quilting you did on it. You have been a busy girl!!!!

Caribousmom

Readerowl Thanks, Karen!

Caribousmom

Quilt455 Thanks!!! Seems like I have been working on this one for awhile so it is good to finally finish it!

Terryt1955

Camille will be so proud of you! She's going to be calling you to use your quilt for her book. And I have got to get me a white porch swing because it is the perfect backrop for your beautiful quilts!

Caribousmom

Terryt1955 LOL. Right! Thanks, Terry :)

Skynme

Looks great, I love the swell quilt and hope to make one for myself one of these days.

Conniharns

This quilt is so pretty Wendy...I was able to see it in person today and it is just scrumptious. I told the girls at work that Wendy made it for me...we laughed then Turbo proceeds to tell them how I am a thief!! Very troublesome...she has issues!!!!

Cseawright

Hmmmmm, I heard she made it for Quilt455 or maybe me . It is gorgeous in person.

Caribousmom

Skynme Thanks, Erica! It comes together fast...took me a long time to get to the quilting part of it, but the top was finished relatively quickly!

Conniharns Hahahahahaha police_car

Cseawright Oh you people are SO funny!!! LOL
