Description

July 4th: It's my month to be Queen and I picked the Great Granny Square. I know it's already been picked for more than one other Hive and that it's everywhere on Pinterest and blogland but I couldn't resist. I've asked for retro/vintage feeling fabrics and requested no brown. I thought I should try out a block using the tutorial I linked to in case someone had any questions. I had just purchased a charm pack of 30's Playtime and used that for my square.I wish the scale of prints was a little more varied in the charm pack so it didn't look so bland. On the next square I'll mix it up with fabrics from other lines.
This is a fun block to make and I'm sure I'll get the variety I'm looking for from the rest of my Hive mates. Can't wait to see what arrives!!

7/5 I can see how these can get addicting. What a great way to use up scraps! Made 2 more blocks.

8/17/13 I'm putting the blocks on my design wall as they come in and love looking at it!  Don't pay attention to the florescent post-its, it's my way of keeping track who made the blocks. Most of these are from Hive #4 but now that I'm Queen for Hive #1(Aug) I'm putting them up as well. It is so much being Queen!!!

True

Love your choice!!

Terryt1955

Thanks True . I need practice on squaring up a block. I thought I had centered the ruler! All those lines are so confusing and distracting!

Nexxus831

Ohhhh I have no 30's fabric. I have a dark pink text fabric and other stuff I was gonna use. It looks like you want these. Guess I need to go shopping. Oh darn 

Terryt1955

No No don't go shopping!! This was just a trial and by no means a suggestion. Go for the pink text, it sounds fun!

Nexxus831

Ok will do. I have some that could maybe pass as them so I will see what blends with the text print. It is such a lovely fabric. I am going to use it as the color next to my kona white fabric

Missriain

These look fabulous!!

Sewbusy64

just checking to see if my block arrived??

Terryt1955

Sewbusy64 It did and I love it! I posted on the Newbee hive #4 but you might not see it since it doesn't alert us when we tag someone on a group thread.Love your fabric choices and it's very retro!!

HawkFan

They all look so nice together. Everyone made great fabric choices

Terryt1955

I know, right! Wait til you are Queen, it's such a blast. Have you chosen your block yet?

Slicksister

Don't they look great? I love them!

Terryt1955

Slicksister Me too! I am so glad I picked this block!

Joke

All the blocks are looking so great together! I've now put granny squares on my to-do list after seeing your blocks!

Terryt1955

Yes you definitely should! It's a great scrap buster or you can make it more planned out and make it a 3 color quilt. It's so versatile!

Quilt455

This is just beautiful! I love that you used the white to make the squares stand out. I am ashamed of myself. I was Feb queen for Hive 3 and still do not have my blocks put together. I did get in on my design wall a few days ago but can't decide how I want to set it all. Great quilt.

Quilt455

Gee. after looking at it again I realized that the blocks are set in white by the makers. They look great on your wall; can't wait to see what you do with them.

Terryt1955

Yep, and I haven't even trimmed them down to the square shape. I just slapped them up on the wall and they still look great. I probably will set them in a white sashing to spread them out a bit. Or maybe I'll get daring and use something completely different!

Terryt1955

Oops, I forgot to tag you Quilt455 .

Capetowngirl

Looking great. Going to be a wonderful looking quilt once you have both hives blocks together

Missriain

They look so good together!!! Thanks for putting up a picture. smile

Caribousmom

So much fun!!!! Love it, Terry! Are you going to do a label on the back with everyone's name?

Sewbusy64

Sew great together

Terryt1955

Caribousmom Wow, I hadn't thought of that but what a great idea. I surely don't want to keep post its attached to the quilt!! LOL.

Terryt1955

Missriain Did you see yours and think "Hey, there's mine!"
That's what I always do!

Terryt1955

Sewbusy64 Isn't it great how they all compliment one another. I'll probably end up making some more and will try to balance out the red just a wee bit. Or use all the red ones for the front and use the others for the back? So many decisions!

Jess

I love these. I never really thought about doing a Granny Square quilt before, but I really love how yours is turning out, and it seems like such a good scrap buster (and I love a good scrap quilt).

Terryt1955

Just follow the tutorial. They are referring to the finished size but it actually comes out 12.5" unfinished and will be the same size as all the others. No need to trim either!! You are so sweet for making this!

You are doing a great job putting our blocks together. Everyone has such complimentary colors. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Terryt1955

Drnic2c Me too! Once I get the blocks from Hive #1 I'll be ready to turn this into a heirloom. So exciting!! And before you know it Jan. will be here and you'll get to experience being a Queen!

I just hope I am able to decide which block by then.

True

I totally missed you had them all up where have I been? I love them all together...wonderful! truly amazing how they all work so well together:-)

Terryt1955

True , I need to hang up another design wall so I can start displaying the new beauties that have come in from Hive #1! It's so exciting!
